Hullo! I have been out of the hardware loop for a while and am thinking of upgrading from an opteron 170 s939 @ 2.7Ghz with an Asus a8n32 sli deluxe with an 8800GTS 512 and 4 Gig of corsair ram to this:

Just checking if the ram I have chosen will be ok (or if there are better choices) and if the psu is a bit too much and if i could get away with the less powerful 550W version. At the mo I have a Hiper 580W type-R thingy but the 80mm fan is driving me nuts and it is almost 3 years old (im scared of it blowing up). I also have an 8800GTS and when I save up some more money I was looking at getting a 4890 :)

Will I notice a huge performance increase keeping in mind i'm going from a dual core to another dual core. I was also going to cross my fingers and hope to unlock the 2 other cores hee hee.

Reason for the upgrade is that my mum wants me to make my brother a pc for his b-day so I was going to make this for myself and give him my current PC. Cheeky I know but I want to play with new hardware :D

It will be mainly used for gaming and general watching movies/internet etc. I would like to overclock and see what my new True Black can do.

Cheers for the help.

yeah I would change the PSU theres nothing you have that would be extra taxing and you can drop down and use the money to upgrade others.

OCZ psu are good

I would reccommend this to last you a good long time and it would be a good overclocker with your true.

Also don't forget you qualify for free shipping which would bring the total to £410.95 but would last a long time. Or knock the cpu down to the 550 to save £70 if you don't see yourself getting the most out of the quad core/fancy your chances at unlocking the other 2 cores ;)

How about...
  • AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £97.99
  • Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £76.99
  • OCZ Platinum AMD Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel (OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK) £69.99
  • OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Ready Modular Power Supply £62.99 on TWO
  • Sub Total : £267.79
  • Shipping : £10.00
  • VAT : £41.67
  • Total : £319.46
Could try unlocking the Tri-Core instead. If no luck, then at least you have a processor that's better than the Dual-Core.

Cheers for the replies guys. I was thinking of sticking with Gigabyte for the motherboard as the RMA gets done in the UK but the Asus Crosshair III looks good as does the MSI 790FX-GD70 AMD 790FX :( so many choices.

I have also heard bad things about the ModXStreams build quality. I have purchsed some budget psu's in the past and they have for the most part broken on me hence why I was going for the Be Quiet. I would also prefer a modular psu as I hate excess wires in my case.

What are the advantages of the OCZ AMD edition memory over the dominator set?

Hows this spec:

Would the Be Quiet 550W psu be ok to power a quad core (in the future) and a 4890 or would that be pushing it?

550W is enough for a single GFX setup, except maybe Dual GPU solutions e.g. 4870 X2 :)

OCZ PSUs seem to have improved since buying PC Power & Cooling.
