The time has come. This is it before I press "buy".

Monitor and water cooling are bought already.

With the hard drives, I'm not bothered about RAID, but went for quietness and then speed. I also intend to partition one of them off by 100gb for the o/s and apps. The remaining space will be for storage (400gb + 500gb).

And I will want to overclock and high-end game.

If there is anything worth improving, I have about another £100 - £200 in the budget, but don't need to spend it if it won't make that big a difference.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £197.39

Viewsonic TFT 20" VX2025wm (8 ms) £253.40

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £93.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £93.99

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 640MB GDDR3 £264.36

Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultra+ Watercooling Kit £202.09

Lian-Li PC V2000b PLUS Black Aluminium Full-Tower £162.14

Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK) £99.86

Asus P5N32-E SLi nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £152.74

Team Xtreem 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz £193.86

Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £22.31

Decent spec, although if you want quietness then I would opt for Samsung Spinpoint HDDs. WD aren't that quiet. I have a WD and wish I hadn't lol. Seagate for speed and Samsung for quietness.

Thanks for that guys.....

One thing about the noise tho, Mish

I've heard the Raptors are very noisy but this won't necessarily apply to the WD AAKSs (due to spindly-accessy-10,000y-type things)

What do you think?

I have the WD Caviar SE 160GB 8MB Cache one. So its probably slightly different, can't really comment on that what you have selected. Generally though the Samsungs are very quiet, have a scout on google for some reviews!

I've been scouting and can't argue with the claims off quietness...

..I don't think I'll take that much of a performance hit if I swap them in...

so, if I go for 2xSamsung Spinpoint 400gb, same deal with the 100gb partition on one, then is this sounding pretty good all round?

The AAks drives have been reported to be faster than the 7200.10's, they're not the quietest drives in the world, if your wanting silent then the spinpoints are what your looking for. Also might want to look at the Dell 20"
