Hey there, I'm looking to build a new PC for around 800 - 950 probably around the beginning of September. This will replace an ageing Opteron 165, Nvidia 7900GT, 2gb DDR1 RAM & 19" ViewSonic VX924 setup.

What do you think about this rough spec? This comes to 870 ish.

Any comments/suggestions?

Smallish case is imperative really as i'm graduating in a year so can see myself likely moving around a lot and probably won't be upgrading/replacing this new rig anytime soon!

Cheers,

Nice case, but not as small as you might be hoping for. It's quite deep. I won't comment on the rest of the spec, as it'll all be different come September. Were you buying now it looks solid.

How do you feel about matx? The only severe limitation with it these days is four expansion slots instead of 7. Gone are the days where they could only take one graphics card. It'll be smaller (which I think makes it inherently prettier), work exactly as well and be slightly more difficult to cool. Well worth a look

The AMD AM3 is dual channel, therefore RAM selected will only work in slower single-channel mode. Find DDR3 RAM for that setup here.

But as mentioned, Sept is a long way & both sides (AMD/Intel) should have released new processors & probably new mobo chipsets

m-ATX could be cool - though from a quick scout around that format doesn't support AM3?

Is there another case (ATX) that might be smaller than the Lian Li you could recomend?

I must say I don't really know why i'm offering up a spec when I have no intention of buying for another 3 months! What sort of changes are coming in the way of CPUs/GPUs? A socket change at all? As you can tell i'm a bit out of date with hardware really.

i5 will turn up at some point, doesn't look terribly interesting imo. AM3 is unlikely to be superseded soon but I confess I'm unfamiliar with AMD's plans for the future

No AM3 matx motherboards yet? Well I'll be. Posting from a matx am2+ and hadn't crossed my mind that newer ones didn't exist. Perhaps they will by September.

The lian li you've picked is the smallest atx case you'll find without making one yourself I'm afraid, it's very efficiently laid out. I'm considering changing to one of them from an Eclipse, but probably not for a while yet. Very nice case, but it's as deep as most atx cases so not as small as one might hope.
