I've never actually built a system from scratch before, so I'd like to double check that I have everything I need in this purchase, and that everything I have selected it compatable :)

Totals to £840.52 including shipping, which is pretty much my maximum budget.

Any changes/suggestions?

Edited - Since I didn't mention it, the purpose of this system is primarily gaming.

Welcome to the forums!

Yeah it all looks compatible but you can get a much higher benchmark from that sort of budget.

Been trying to get a spec for you finalized but i keep going over budget.

If you are going to be using it for gaming may I suggest staying with XP for now if you already own a copy. I can get a spec that will far outperform that for just about 890 without an OS :)

I still have my old copy of XP Pro, so I could skip the OS. Is Vista all that much of an upgrade in terms of anything but eye candy? Could you also post that specification you found, as close to budget as possible ;)

Vista has been known to take anything from 10FPS to 70FPS away from games. Its really not a gaming OS unless you have 4gb of ram. I would recommend staying with XP for now. Vista does add some nice features like a autodefragmenter and some nice visual effects but its not worth it IMO.

This is what I have so far, it will far outperform your initial spec there :)

One more question then I think. You listed another CPU heatsink (I think?). Does the E6600 not come with one, or is the one it comes with very poor, or what? Is the extra ~£30 for a new heatsink extremely valuable?

That spec there is a very very good overclocker. Fan is added because the stock cooler is just fine ( if a little noisy ) at stock speeds. That system will overclock really high without even pushing it so your not going to be causing damage. The Fan is to keep CPU temps safe when overclocked and underload, which it will do magnificantly.

You can get 40% overclocks with that ram and CPU quite easily which will massivly increase your gaming benchmark.

If you really don't want to theres always the Giel PC6400 and you can lose the fan. I would highly recommend the oc though.

Alright, thanks a lot for the help and advice. Now I just hope I can put the bloody thing together without breaking something ;)
