As Christmas is coming up (as we all know) I was thinking I might put together a HTPC as my present I've put together this spec and I think it should be ok but what does everyone think? (Note: it will be mainly used for dvds, music and eventually HD quality movies)

I've read there might be an issue with the motherboard and RAM? Also ideas on cases? preferably with a psu with enough support for a second HDD at some stage and finally remotes? I plan on using XP home and media portal with this system.

I think you'd be better off with and AM2 setup using the Asus M2NPV-VM. I have one and it's fantastic for HD content.

Swap the motherboard for the Asus P5E-VM HDMI, the Abit ones are not very reliable to say the least.
