Hi all,

Got to look for a broadband only package for the mother in law.

Going to be used for web browsing (email and facebook mainly), maybe some youtube watching.

http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/package-info-972-plusnet-value.html

She will need a modem/router.

Is that package any good? Am I also correct in thinking that all wireless routers also come with the ability to connect through a cable?

I too am very close to using Plus Net for my mum.
She really doesn't need an amazing service - just something she can use for web browsing and email.

The promotion at the moment is £5.99 per month for first 3 months and then £11.99 per month.
Unless you're on a "Level 3" exchange, where you can get it for £5.99 every month. (Level 3 exchanges are those with 4 or more operators).

I went through a mock order yesterday and the impression the Plus Net website gave me was that the wired router has no wireless and the wireless router has no wired ports - not a router I've seen, but the impression was it was either wired or wireless.

I'm going to get the wired router for my mum from them and then in the future I'll buy a wireless/wired one for when I call around with the laptop.

have you checked if o2 is available? you can get unlimited 8mb LLU for £12.23 or just £7.34 if you have an 02 mobile (even if not on a contract, top up a payg sim 10quid every 3 months to qualify for same discount)

plus there are some rather excellent promotions on at the moment.

3 months free
50 quid cashback if you signup through quidco

wireless router is free although it's on loan. you have to send it back if you leave. :p

well, finally got round to checking this out and 02 does seem the best deal but doesn't cover her area, enter her number in to Be and it again doesn't cover her area.

Not too keen on download limits either as she is single and will be spending a lot of time browsing, facebooking etc.

If like me she has no LLU providers in her area then Plusnet is definitely worth considering.

I moved to them about 12 months ago from Entanet and it's been excellent, no complaints here.
I'm on Option 3 (I don't think they do that package anymore for new customers:() and I never notice the throttling unless I try to download from p2p or usenet between 4pm and 12am (when the throttling kicks in on option 3).
Websites and streaming is very quick and I don't even notice the difference when throttling is on or off.
I've found it's really only p2p, usenet binary and some websites like gamershell, etc. which are affected during the throttle times but you can usually find other sources to download files from anyway.
If for example on the rare occasion I need something like a game demo during the throttled period I can 99% of the time find a server which is not affected and download at full speed.
I shedule any downloads for between midnight and 8am when it's completely unthrottled and uncapped. :)

It does depend on the package though and I'm not sure how much value is throttled compared to the old Option 3 - you might want to ask on the thinkbroadband forum.

As for customer service, they've been the best I have ever used so far. They usually reply to questions on their online ticket system within 2 hours.
