Just had an RMA rejected by OCUK because there is no serial number sticker on my GPU that has broken.

It must have been sold to me without a sticker and I did not know this would invalidate the warranty - make sure yours has a serial number.

OCUK dont check before they sell it but will reject it if you ever try and send it back

I wasn't aware either and at no point did anyone point this requirement out until I tried to return the defective component.

OcUK not my problem guv response is pretty shoddy

RMA is 289946

I didn't even know there was a sticker, hence the warning to others to check.

fs123 - thx for the suggestion, would this work if the gpu is defunct, there was smoke coming from the power connection to the card when you try and turn on the pc! A quick google search suggests this is a common problem with the MSI GTX780. PC wont now start unless you remove the GPU card.

yes I bought it from OCUK, and shows in the order history etc, take the point that I could have bought a junk one from ebay and sent this back but why would i do that if my card (which I have proof I bought from OCUK) was still working, I could just sell it anyway?

when I called OCUK the unhelpful chap basically accused me of lying, I am not sure what I could have done to avoid this, other than check that there was a sticker when I originally received the card but how was I supposed to know that! What else do you need to check?

I don't understand the scam risk; are there actually any dodgy cards that could be swapped, surely if a card stops working, its returned under warranty and fixed? Am I being naive? We are only talking about cards that are under the warranty period.

Hi Bailey, thx for looking at this.

No, unfortunately I do not have the box, I bought the card in Nov '13, would have been thown away a long time ago.

I wonder if the S/n would have been recorded in the geforce driver software still on my PC and somehow encoded on the card, noting I'm way out of my knowlegde zone here, though

Hi Bailey

How else can I get you the serial number, you have my GPU? If there is a way of getting it from my PC please let me know, I dont have the box but I will check to see if I have any of the paper work that came with it.

thx

I am having a hard time believing that the manufacturers of these incredibly complicated pieces of kit have not in some way built in a unique identifier, in the hardware or the code.
Do they really rely on a 5p sticker that is barely stuck on when new and is presumably quite easy to swap if you wanted to scam, to verify its within the warranty period?
The cynic in me thinks that its just an easy way to avoid warranty claims.

not sure registering on warranty site will help if the sticker falls off, apparantly the only way to identify a card is by the sticker.

if the sticker is not on the card, there is no way of proving it matches the serial number you have recorded.

according to the very rude person I sopke with at OCUK, he has never seen a card which did not have a sticker on and directly accused me of intentionally removing it

hairdryer/heat gun on low and scalpel.

Deja-thread here

Thx for the Deja-thread reference, seems its not an uncommon problem.

Also good to see he got a full refund, albeit after taking it to the small claims court.

I hope OcUk will resolve this and either clearly warn people in future or not use a missing sticker as an excuse.

In future, it might be worth getting the serial from GPUZ upon reception of the new device in case it fails...

Ridiculous as it seems, apparently the serial number is only recorded on the sticker, GPUZ will not be able to show it, otherwise there would be no need for a sticker?

Why cant OCUK fit the card and get the serial that way, seems lazy to me. If MSI dont embed the serial into the firmware i would be shocked.

Of course there would, stock control for one.

sorry, I meant there would be no need for the sticker for warranty purposes
