****check serial number sticker on GPU****

As long as the gpu in question is shown in you account purchase history then ocuk should give the benefit of the doubt and accept the RMA.

I think the strict policy is because someone could do a scam by returning a dodgy card and keeping the new card.

RMA is 289946

I didn't even know there was a sticker, hence the warning to others to check.

fs123 - thx for the suggestion, would this work if the gpu is defunct, there was smoke coming from the power connection to the card when you try and turn on the pc! A quick google search suggests this is a common problem with the MSI GTX780. PC wont now start unless you remove the GPU card.

Sorry to hear of this issue, having checked this the card in question is an MSI so they all should have a serial number on the back.

By any chance do you have the box for the card itself still as the serial number should be on there as well?

I will do everything I can do help with this.

Bailey

I don't understand the scam risk; are there actually any dodgy cards that could be swapped, surely if a card stops working, its returned under warranty and fixed? Am I being naive? We are only talking about cards that are under the warranty period.

Buy a faulty card for cheap.
RMA under warranty.
Replacement card arrives.
Sell/Keep replacement card.
???
Profit.

Hi Bailey, thx for looking at this.

No, unfortunately I do not have the box, I bought the card in Nov '13, would have been thown away a long time ago.

I wonder if the S/n would have been recorded in the geforce driver software still on my PC and somehow encoded on the card, noting I'm way out of my knowlegde zone here, though

The manufacturers should stamp/inscribe the serial no on the pcb. The stickers never stay on, wouldn't be surprised if it has dropped of and got shredded by a fan.

Is there any way you can get me a serial number for the card?

I will check with MSI to see if we can RMA it without a serial number in the mean time however.

I don't really understand why a serial number is even needed? Surely if the card is still under warranty it should be down to MSI to fix it regardless of its serial number?

I have an Evga 980ti. What's to stop me getting a cheap faulty one off ebay, sending that back claiming that is mine that I bought from Ocuk and getting a new one sent out. Suddenly I have a 2nd 980ti for free.

This is where the serial number comes into play. They record the serial number of the card that comes out to me and can compare that if it comes back as an rma.

It's not completely fool proof but it stops a lot of scams.

But surely with a card such as a 980ti being so new to market, it will still be under warranty regardless. So the original owner would have just RMA'd it anyways, no need to sell it for cheaps online...

If the process of stopping a small minority from scamming causes legitimate customers to be left high and dry due to things outside of their control (like stickers falling off) then it is a stupid policy. Its like the old DRM issues, penalize legit customers to stop people pirating games, utterly ridiculous.

Hi Bailey

How else can I get you the serial number, you have my GPU? If there is a way of getting it from my PC please let me know, I dont have the box but I will check to see if I have any of the paper work that came with it.

thx

I agree it's annoying, I've been denied rmas in the past due to this issue with other companies. But if msi demand a serial number then there's not much ocuk can do, apart from sort it themselves and be out of pocket for it.

Found the cause of my fan vibration... Never guess what was caught on the centre fan? (Well part of it anyway). Looks like I'd be stuffed if I needed to RMA. :p

I always thought the stickers were there because they let the manufacturer know if the card had been improperly handled? I mean anyone could for instance spill something on it, and just clean it up with an alcohol bath before sending it in for RMA, removing any evidence of harm.
