****check serial number sticker on GPU****

But surely you also have to see it from the supplier/manufacturers side. Putting the warranty issue aside for the moment, how do they know you are sending them the same card back that they sent you?

If this were a 10 year old card with a lifetime guarantee I'd agree with you.

The 980ti released approx 4 months ago.

There is no 980ti in existence that is not in warranty. I'm sure MSI can see it is an MSI card, and so, even if it were not the one purchased by the OP from OcUK, it is definitely one produced by them and still in warranty and they should repair/replace it.

In fact, as the card is under 6 months old, it would be deemed an inherent defect and down to the retailer to disprove as faulty rather than the other way around were it to go to court, so why bother trying to fight it? To upset the customer and ensure they never shop there again?

Were I the OP I'd just send a letter before action and if no positive response go to small claims.

In relation to the above bit I've highlighted, there will be quite a few 980ti cards that are no longer in warranty - any that have had their cooler removed to change to watercooling or repaste the cooler if the manufacturer doesn't allow this, or any that have changed hands as the warranty only covers the original purchaser. Or any that have been abused/damaged by the owner will certainly be out of warranty! :D I think you mean that there are no 980ti cards whose warranty length have expired, which is very different to stating that ALL 980ti cards are still covered by a warranty.

OP - I'm not trying to say you've done anything to negate your warranty, and I hope Bailey/OcUK is able to get you sorted and happy (sure he can).

There are a lot of 980Tis that aren't in warranty as a lot of GPU manufacturers only give warranty to the original purchaser. (EVGA is/was the only one to transfer warranty to multiple owners if I recall)

There have been hundreds sold second hand, and I'm sure OcUK have sold a tonne of B-Grade ones which could be out of warranty depending on when purchased too.

Everyone using water blocks for a long time will notice these stickers cause were checking the blocks gonna fit using the model number on there, ive had a few cards with the sticker hanging off a bit. They should make sure theyre stuck a flat bit of the PCB really, i had one that was only stuck to the tails protruding through the PCB so obviously it fell right off as soon as i looked at it. :)

Deja-thread here

Thx for the Deja-thread reference, seems its not an uncommon problem.

Also good to see he got a full refund, albeit after taking it to the small claims court.

I hope OcUk will resolve this and either clearly warn people in future or not use a missing sticker as an excuse.

In future, it might be worth getting the serial from GPUZ upon reception of the new device in case it fails...

Ridiculous as it seems, apparently the serial number is only recorded on the sticker, GPUZ will not be able to show it, otherwise there would be no need for a sticker?

Why cant OCUK fit the card and get the serial that way, seems lazy to me. If MSI dont embed the serial into the firmware i would be shocked.

Of course there would, stock control for one.

sorry, I meant there would be no need for the sticker for warranty purposes

Because the OP stated in one of his posts that his PC won't turn on with the card plugged in. Would imagine it would be the same for any test benches OCUK would use.

This is also another reason why I don't understand people throwing away the box. The serial number is also on a sticker on the box.

If you're buying a lot of PC kit, that's a lot of storage space you need.

I'd like to, but I just don't have the space to keep boxes.

I just store my boxes in my PC case box. But yeah it does take up a lot of room. I guess the best way would be to take a picture of the box and serial numbers as proof for later on. Although the manufacturers can still say that no sticker = no warranty.

SuperBailey to the rescue! (as always)

Nice save on behalf of OcUK and MSI customer service, sir. :)

Glad you got this sorted, OP.

One tip for you, if you lack the storage space to store the boxes etc, always a good step to photograph the serial number right when you first open the box.
