Just had an RMA rejected by OCUK because there is no serial number sticker on my GPU that has broken.

It must have been sold to me without a sticker and I did not know this would invalidate the warranty - make sure yours has a serial number.

OCUK dont check before they sell it but will reject it if you ever try and send it back
 
I'm surprised some of the serial number stickers actually manage to stay on, with the heat being put out by the card sometimes they can lift from the pcb and be hanging on by a thread.
 
I wasn't aware either and at no point did anyone point this requirement out until I tried to return the defective component.

OcUK not my problem guv response is pretty shoddy

That attitude is cropping up more and more these days and nothing gets done until a huge thread has developed on the forum and damage limitation kicks in.

I have recieved quite a few brand new cards where the serial number stick is barely stuck to the card.

So have I - stickers often barely attached when brand new, let alone after months or years of use.

Kick up a massive stink. It's the only way to get any customer service these days it seems, sadly.

I'm assuming you bought it from here, ocuk, so they must have the sale in their records anyway. Do not be fobbed off!

I'd imagine the serial number is used to identify it's the one you bought, or similar?

E.G: I could go and buy a faulty 980Ti from a well-known auction site for £50, send it back to OcUK claiming it it was the one I bought from them, and get a new one sent back to me - Free £400 profit for me right?

It sucks that your RMA was rejected but do you relay think overclockers should open up each box for each graphics card they sell to check if the S/N sticker is there. must be 100's of box's a day at least.

Saying that if I noticed that my brand new card I got did'nt have one I would be requesting a new unit, even if it was on the side of the box as who knows what card is in S/N:001's box etc
 
Try one of the suggestions in this link to get the serial number and see if it matches the one on the box. If it does match then use that as evidence that the card is the correct one.

Note: Note that this technique only works if the hardware manufacturer implements it. I can't give a percentage of accuracy, but I would guess the big players would implement it. If it's not implemented, Windows will generate a unique number instead.

Method 1 - Device Manager

Open the Windows Device Manager. Find your video card under Display Adapters. Double-click on it. Under the "Details" tab, select the "Device Instance Path" property.

Method 2 - WMI

Using WMI, at the command line, run the following command.

wmic PATH Win32_VideoController GET Description,PNPDeviceID

Method 3 - Use a Tool

A program like SIW will grab the PNP Device ID for you, but it won't do the parsing for the serial number.

Parsing It

Looking at the PNPDeviceID value, break it up by "\".

The first piece it the bus type. For me, it is PCI.
The second section describes the card. There's a vendor code, model number, etc.
The last section contains a number separated by ampersands. The serial number is the second number in that list, formatted in hex.

I didn't even know there was a sticker, hence the warning to others to check.

fs123 - thx for the suggestion, would this work if the gpu is defunct, there was smoke coming from the power connection to the card when you try and turn on the pc! A quick google search suggests this is a common problem with the MSI GTX780. PC wont now start unless you remove the GPU card.
 
As long as the gpu in question is shown in you account purchase history then ocuk should give the benefit of the doubt and accept the RMA.
 
Some clarification re the sticker would be nice to know for future reference. :)

yes I bought it from OCUK, and shows in the order history etc, take the point that I could have bought a junk one from ebay and sent this back but why would i do that if my card (which I have proof I bought from OCUK) was still working, I could just sell it anyway?
 
Most of the gpus that I've bought from ocuk have been opened and used already. They always swap out for a new when the issue is raised but they really need to sort it out.
 
Arnt serial numbers also marked on the pcb under the cooler?


Definatly post in the cs section,rma rejection seems unreasonable given you have proof of purchase and how flimsy those stickers are at the best of times
 
I didn't even though there was a sticker with the serial, never noticed it!

Regardless, proof of purchase should suffice surely?
 
when I called OCUK the unhelpful chap basically accused me of lying, I am not sure what I could have done to avoid this, other than check that there was a sticker when I originally received the card but how was I supposed to know that! What else do you need to check?
