Could I just get the thumbs up from you lot on this spec before I click the magic buy button?

I've been away from desktops for some years (last one I built was back in ~2000 which was an Athlon 850 OC to 1Ghz on an Abit KT7A - what a machine!) and obviously so much has changed since then so there's been a lot of reading to do.

Only PC I've been using for the last 6 years or so has been my pentium m banias 1.5 laptop but now I need a proper desktop again with some reasonable oomph. Will be doing CAD and some games like L4D and MW2 on it.

I've based the build on the £700 AMD build in 95thrifles' 'choosing your components' thread (extremely helpful, thanks!) but changed a few bits to my preference/TWO offers

I've gone for the phenom II dual as it's very good value and I dont think I need a quad. Not really looking to overclock necessarily however I can have a go at unlocking the other 2 cores - if it works then that's a bonus but if it doesn't work, then no bother really.

I already have a keyboard and monitor I want to use.

Just wanted to check if there are any issues with this combination of components or if there are some better alternatives I could use instead?

Looks good to me :) I might personally have tried to head down the intel route, but it looks like you have a good idea of why you want those components.

(On the offchance you're a student, windows 7 can be had on the cheap here)

Right, my order is being held because of the PSU being out of stock. So I want to swap it for another type.

Will this 500W one (OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent Power Supply) be enough to power my setup? Note I will have 2x hard drives.

If yes, how about if I added a second 5770 later, would it still be enough?

The other thing is the spec for this PSU says it has 2x SATA connectors. If I have 2 SATA hard drives and a SATA optical drive, how do I get the extra SATA power connector? Some kind of splitter?

yes you will have to

I think it should be enough or you could get the 600watt OCZ just to make sure

OK thanks, this one - OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply looks like it should fit the bill? - it's a few quid cheaper than the corsair one as well.

yeah thats the one there is a single rail one which is about £57 which is also 600watt but not a modular
