Trying to put together a new build for my father who needs something for day to day use and music - i.e. rig it up to a fairly top wack HiFi system hence need the L R audio out on the front panel of the XFi platinum. Am trying to stay in the £900 mark but am already £50 over.

Your thoughts would be welcome!
Have opted for the Foxconn MoBo to get DDR3 cover in the future - is this wise or should I just stick wih DDR2 and get more memory!?

if you want to get a faster cpu, the only ones i would get are the e6750 ,q6600 or e2180
maybe get a HD-DVD or bluray drive for HD movies as that spec should handle HD media without a problem

definately dump that processor in favour of a 2180 and a good cpu cooler(tuniq tower/arctic freezer 7 pro/thermalight 120 extreme) and clock it, far better value than the E6850

spend that little extra money on a slightly better graphics card, a 512MB 8600 or something along those lines =]

jak's spec does, as ever, look good.

As this is for my father and he is 300 miles from me my hunch is not to overclock as if anything goes wrong he is a luddite and it is a long way for me to travel or a complicated phone call so back to original question - the idea is that this will last him many years of internet etc so I would like to make it as future proof as possible - is it worth going for bottom end DDR3 now?

Thanks again!

ddr3 is not worth even mentioning at the moment as it offers no real benifits over DDR2 especially if overclocking is not going to be considered. a quad is pointless for office work unless it includes encoding videos and media. a e2180 should be fast enough anyway

at that price, i would get a 256MB 3850 as a graphics card but it would be overkill for him. however it does make it possible for you to game on his Pc when your visiting

just to check, are you building a your dad a high spec gamign rig for soley office work or is it secretly for when you or other relatives visit him and they want to play pc games like CoD4 or other new games on it?

I have build several p4 based systems this year with bits I blagged or got from the bay of e that would do what your Dad needs. I am currently typing on a machine that cost me £35. 3ghz Hyper threading, 1gb ram.

If you were closer you could have it for £100. :)

My new stuff comes Monday:cool:

BFG GeForce 8600 GTS OC2 ThermoIntelligence 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £99.99
(£117.49) £99.99

massive waste of time as someone said

replace it with either a (probably cheaper) 8600GT 512 or a 3850

Back to Chrispystix and your point - I too have done similar - best yet is lifted a P4 HT system out of the local skip - plugged in a new HD and loaded the OS and hey presto!! It works but it is a bit sh*te - and this one for my Dad isn't my money so should keep him happy for some time!
