Hey

Just been out and washed the car before I take it for a drive and found one of my bloody wheel nuts has disappeared.

I don't know if it's just worked it's way loose or if someone has taken it off, but it was a locking wheel nut so I don't know why they'd just do the hard one. :o

Bit concerning to say the least as I've been thrasing it a bit in the last few days, and that wheel may have only had 3 nuts on the whole time. :o

So I need to buy some new locking wheel nuts, but is it actually safe to drive with just 3 nuts? I've probably been driving on 3 anyway but now I know it's bound to go wrong.

Anyway, Check Your Nuts! They may have decided to leave you.

Follow this entirely at your own risk:

I have driven cars for very long periods with only 3 studs. Nothing happened.

Made a thread on this a while back, interestingly I think it had the same thread title. :)

I felt some strange wobblings going on at the back of the car, so I took it home to discover that some of the nuts where loose.

Same here. I lost the key to my locking nuts and had the tyres replaced. The guy at the tyre yard took the security nuts off and told me that it would be fine to drive around in with 3 nuts per wheel until I got hold of 4 more nuts (I did about 500 miles like that, no problem).

I 'forgot' to fully tighten up the nuts on the front near-side wheel of the ST once, spent a good week or so wondering what the crunching noise was :o

Thankfully there was no damage done, but I had been giving it some.

Scort.
