ok in a year or so im looking to get a new car. I have seen a Chevrolet Lacetti. under 3k, 07plate , 37000 miles ist the 1.8 sport. they are all quite cheap and if i looked at other cars i simply cannot get the value for money in terms of millage and age.
what the general consensus on Chevrolet's?

The usual suspects really, but they will be older and have done more miles, still, shouldn't be a major issue. Anyway the Ford Mondeo MK3 (cliche I know but it fits! ...again), Mazda 6 MK1, VW Passat B5/.5, Honda Accord 7th gen, Seat Toledo MK2, VW Bora, Vauxhall Omega.

There are also a series of compact hatches you can get like the Focus, Astra and Civic etc, but in my experience they always seem to hold their prices better at this end of the market and so don't offer such good value for money as their larger or compact saloon counterparts. And I wouldn't recommend you buy a 1st gen Focus or a Mk4 Astra, they are both a bit past it now really, for 2k or less yes, but 3k or perhaps a tad more you can do better.

I have seen some last gen Accords with higher miles getting awfully close to 3k lately, certainly I've seen some that look really nice for about 3.8k with circa 120k miles on with good specifications and the only thing that really seems to be knocking them down is the fact they have crossed the 100k mile mark. I'd be looking very closely at these if I were you.

We had one for a bit as a hire car,

Horrible thing, slow and I have seen thicker metal on tin foil!

Also nasty inside with pods everywhere.

You get what you pay for.

I have a chevy cobalt, its great on mpg I get 2 x what I get in my jeep. But dear god its dog ****. I will be getting rid asap.

Abysmal piles of ****

The above suggestions - any of them - would be a far better bet.

O/T - Pinter75 do you still have your 540i out of curiosity?
