Hi

Well not exactly but let me explain what I mean.

I am running a XFX 7800 GTX extreme 256mb card at the moment with a Iiyama 17" TFT screen (AS4316UTC).

Although I am more than happy with the card with the release of Vista and DX10 etc I am in the mood to upgrade given I have resisted temptation so far and with the release of the 8900 cards in the next few months my credit card keeps shouting at me to spend my £ lol.

However, I have just rebuilt my daughters PC from scratch ( DFI Expert board, OCZ 700 W PSU, 2GB G.Skill RAM and a BGF 6600 GPU) and the only thing she is missing so far is a monitor.

Soooo....I have been thinking of giving her my screen and getting myself a new one with the intention of then getting a new graphics card when they are released.

I have my eye on either the Dell 24 " 2407WPF or maybe if I can justify it the BenQ 24" FP241W.

OR

do I get my daughter a cheap monitor keep my existing Iiyama and get myself a 8900 when they come out? I admit that this would be the cheaper option as far as £ is concerned but I suspect that the 8900 may be a huge overkill for my 17" screen.

hence the chicken or the egg title which comes first? monitor the the 8900??

your thoughts please :) thanks

I'd personally go with the larger monitor but accept that you won't be able to play with high details on until you upgrade to a faster video card.

I don't think DX10 will be mainstream for another year minimum so your existing graphics card would do fine but it may be slightly underpowered for a 24" monitor, bit of a quandry you find yourself in really. :)

7800GTX will be fine for 1920x1200 resolution in most games, just turn down the AA/AF a little. I used to run my Dell 2407 with a Geforce 6800GT, and my GF had the same screen on a Geforce 5900SE!!! (Although with the 5900 she had to game at 1680x1050.)

Get the monitor, Im sure you'll find the 7800GTX is up to the job.

I wouldnt worry about Vista or DX10 right now, wait another 6-12 months and then mebee think about it. There wont be any DX10 only games for a while, and if there are, they will just be showpiece games sponsored by microsoft.
