As I couldn't shift my old dell PC I have decided to to set up my 4 year old daughter with her first PC. Anyway what I am thinking is sort the OS to a child friendly version so its simple for her to use and learn on, can anyone recommend me any linux distros that may help me achieve this.

It needn't be light as she will have core duo cpu, 4 gig of ram and a GeForce 8600 GT 256mb.

Many thanks

I'd try JoliOS. It's an Ubuntu/Chrome based distro and runs pretty quickly. My 4-6 year olds have no problems with it.

You can try it out in Google Chrome as an app to see what you think beforehand.

Protip: She doesn't care about the OS. You could put OS/2 on there and she wouldn't think twice. This is how much it matters: >.<

as long as she can find the firefox icon and knows how to search for 'cbeebies' or 'disney clubhouse' she'll be fine.

Or why don't you configure some nice shortcuts to the things she likes and hide/disable everything else.

My 4+6 year olds have no problem using Gnome, or MacOSX or windows. I'm not sure they even realise they are different things.

I agree 100% with this. My 6yo daughter happens to have XP on her PC, but she's used different flavours of Linux in the past with no problems at all. As Whitecrook says, all she needs is an icon to launch Firefox and some preconfigured shortcuts to her favourite gaming websites.

Thanks for the suggestions magic desktop has caught my attention exactly the kind of thing I am after thanks hyburnate. The problem I find is she gets bored very quickly and if it doesn't look nice and is very easy to use she will just crack on with playing dolls or something.

lol

I don't think this ais becuase it 'doesn't look nice' Trust me She doesn't give a thought to 'how it looks' Only people who care about themes and stuff worry about these things. Maybe she like to crack on with here dolls cos, she's a 4 (4!) year old girl and not a 12 year old boy ?
