After sorting out the CD Drive problem, I am now looking for software to lock down the pc, so there is no access to control panel etc on a certain user account. Its for a 10 year old, so internet protection is neccesary too.

Have searched on google but can't seem to find exactly what I'm after. Just wondered if anyone has done this before and what software they used?

Thanks,
Mark

What version of Windows do you have? GroupPolicy should be able to do everything you need.

Just make sure you deny yourself read access before you reboot. :)

Thanks, will have a look into that and see what I can come up with :)

/edit Its showing me that theres nothing to view in software, windows and administrative templates

lol, be careful about asking about kids and computers, opens up a whole can 'o worms!

As for your question, i use content protect now, its pretty good for the internet side of things, as for locking away the control panel and such -

Make sure your kids logon is limited user (sorry if thats teaching you to suck eggs!)

type "gpedit.msc" into the run dialog

go to Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Task Bar

in the left window you can choose what to disable or hide, just right click on the one you want and set to enabled.

the downside i've found with this is that whatever you disable is disabled for every user, even your admin logon. this can be a pain obviously.

to remove items from the start bar for individual users, right click the start bar when you are logged in as that user and goto properties

click the start menu tab, then click customise. this will give you a list of everything in the start menu that you can disable for that user.

The problem with this is that if your kids smart enough to find this menu, they can change it back.

If anyone knows how to disable the properties menu for the start bar that would be handy

Thanks, have founs a piece of software that does everything, even restricts the internet and logon time. Automatically logs him off once it reaches 9pm! lol

Cheers for your help

Which one did you find?

If you do edit the GroupPolicy, deny administrator read access. To do this you will need to make sure Simple File Sharing is off in Tools > Folder Options in Explorer and you can view hidden files and folders. Goto C:\Windows\sustem32 right click on the GroupPolicy folder and goto the security tab check deny read for admin.

This way you will not nobble the admin account too.

If you want some help with this, MSN is in trust.
