A UK couple on holiday in Portugal had their young children temporarily taken into protective custody after they collapsed drunk, officials have said.

Staff at the Aparthotel Mourabel, in Vilamoura on the Algarve called police after they passed out on Friday night.

The children aged one, two and six were taken to a children's home in Faro while their parents were treated at a health centre in Loule.

The hotel manager said the couple and their three children went out for dinner nearby at about 2000 local time on Friday.

Upon their arrival back at the hotel about two hours later the father passed out on the sofa in reception and could not be woken, he said.

The manager said the mother of the children had tried to return to the apartment with the children, but was "struggling with the pushchair, swaying around from side to side".

The hotel manager said: "The six-year-old boy was pushing the other buggy with the two-year-old girl in it. We put her and the children inside the bar. She was sitting on a chair and she fell asleep and never woke up. We tried to wake her, we tried to put some water on her face and head to wake her but she was very, very bad. She started to be sick every minute."

A spokesman for the local police said they were contacted by hotel staff at 2200 local time because "the children were crying and they could not revive the parents, who were both out cold".

Beeb.

It's a set up.

The man is not the real Father, and her ex-husband is trying to retake custody of the kids. He flew to where they were on holiday and drugged them with rohypnol and is now planning to take them to court for review of custody!!

What gets me is how the news get a hold of stories like these :/

I mean, really, what people need to hear about this on the news lol? Report something relevant to the masses.

Judging by the standards of parenting in my area, this is about as "relevant to the masses" as it gets.

Ironic that it occurred in Portugal, on the anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

Meh, I wish the services would do that with a lot of the parents I see around here, it will usually just end up full circle tho

And that Maddie thing is getting old. Yes, it's a shame what happened, if she was lucky she was killed quickly (probably after it broke all over the news). But we don't need to hear about it every day still! (dare say it's the same with so much in the news today)

I see them (pushchair in hand rich for a day chav mums) on child bennefit day at ouside towncentre pub drinking the money they get to take care of their kids. All the while the kids (toddler/infant/pushchair age) Sit screaming and upset, the only attention they get is dummy into mouth or a bag of crisps. Not fit for looking after children any one of them.

I'm sure I remember hearing about that on the radio, and that they are from Northern Ireland.... what can you expect from a bunch of savages?

;)

c´mon at least this guys take their children with them to dinner:D

i feel sorry for them, because is understandable people who normally drink hot beer , are " caught" by a nice, fresh, fruity bootles of green wine:D ( vinho verde)

I read this article in The Times this morning and was extremely angry, but at the end of the article it went on too say that the parents ripped out the drips at hospital and ran away to look for the kids! They were both extremely upset according too the barman at the hotel and he said that they were really nice friendly people who he thinks simply made a bad mistake by overdoing the drink on what was an extremely hot day even by their standards.
Of course an investigation should occur but I honestly think that from reading what people were saying about them that it was a horrid mistake that they genuinely feel very bad about.
