I absolutely love Nandos hot chilli sauce, but its pretty expensive at £2 for a small 125ml bottle. Just wondering if there was a similar product about that tasted the same but without the expensive brand name?

I have tried quite a few hot chilli sauces and haven't liked many of them. They all seem to be just mainly heat with no actual taste. The nando sauce seems to have a nice citrus and garlic kick to it, which along with the mild heat makes a really nice sauce.

Awesome, I think i'll give that a try. I take it they need to be African Birdseye chillies?

How long do you cook the garlic and red pepper for?

I think they are the same. Apparently if using dried you soak in water for 12-24 hours before using and they are as good as using fresh. These are what I was going to get, but i'll hold off a bit to make sure they're right.

This is the ingredients list for the hot Nandos piri piri sauce:

Water, Distilled Vinegar, Lemon Puree (6%), Onion Puree (6%), Salt, Spices (Cayenne Pepper, African Bird's Eye Chilli, Paprika), Green Chilli, Sunflower Seed Oil, Garlic Puree, Stabilisers (Xanthan Gum, Propylene Glycol Alginate), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Rosemary Extract

To be honest I'm not too fussy about making it with traditional chillies. I tend to use a base of red jalapenos and then add something more interesting - like scotch bonnets or whatever else I fancy.

why bother soaking for 24 hours? why not just add some extra water to the sauce and let them keep their flavour rather than soaking then getting rid of the excess water with some of the flavour in it

Good point and I have no idea, its just what i read. Its maybe just in case you want to use the sauce straight away as you don't cook it for long, so the dried chillies might make the sauce a bit gritty until they soften.

Iceland sell the large restaurant size sauces for under £4.
Thanks I did look at these from various places, but the ingredients are very basic compared to the Nandos sauce. I'm guessing they will be more like the takeaway kebab chilli sauce, which is still quite nice, but not the same as the Nandos stuff. I might get some to try anyway as I like my kebabs drowned in chilli sauce the but takeaways just put a tiny squirt on despite me asking for extra.

I've used the only chillis my local supermarket sell, it's still bloody tasty!

You can make anythign though, a friend made a batch of peach hot sauce and WOW! :)

That sounds nice, although i'd have to blend it up more than they have done. Will definitely be trying some of these recipes.

Sorry my post wasn't clear. Iceland sell actual Nandos sauce in the large restaurant sized bottles :)

Costco sell large bottles of the stuff!

Ahh, thanks, i'll have to have a look next time i'm in town.

I bought some Tesco Habanero chilli sauce to try. Its in a similar sized bottle to the Nandos sauce, but is 75p instead of £2. It looks to contain some of the same ingredients and is a similar colour, but smells nothing like it. I'll report back if its any good.
