China Coup???

WTF is going on, Russia is threatening nuclear war in Ukraine and now there are rumours of Xi Jinping, the guy who dubiously extended his own term in office, being coup'd today:

Channel 4 news earlier had a piece on China's speech today at the UNGC, and specifically asked why Winnie wasn't there giving the speech in person and were told there is no official line as to why. Which in Chinese roughly translates to "shut the **** up and stop asking questions".

That's the thing, the inner workings of the CCP are pretty secret, if there were a coup then it's quite plausible it would initially start with things like news blackouts, flights being canceled, unexplained absence of the head of state etc.

He could have annoyed some other high-ranking officials by staying on longer than he should have or over any number of issues like the current Covid response (harsh lockdowns rather than increased vaccinations), diplomacy re: Russia and the risky situation in Ukraine, issues re: Taiwan - did some ultra-nationalists hope to have started some sort of military action there already or conversely could some more liberal types want to kick him out?

I saw a comment on Twitter along the lines of: there has in fact been a coup but because of the Chinese cultural practice of saving face Xi will carry on "acting" as President. j/k
