China has built a Thorium molten salt reactor

France 24 has the story. It's a tiddler of a reactor but it's a prototype. I'm sure a lot of people are going to be watching very carefully. Thorium is vastly more common - and cheaper - than uranium and the basic design is much safer than water-cooled reactors.

I believe the technology is actually known; it's just that no one else has so far put up the money to do it.

Looking at the original article, it seems as though Th reactors are still quite a long way off and still possess a number of technical challenges. It may well be the future, but you'd need to do a lot to convince me, and moreover the energy suppliers that its worth investing in.

Yes, this is a test reactor. We'll know if it works within a year.
