You've got to remember that this is a cultural norm to the Japanese. It might seem nasty to us, but to them setting out poison and traps for rats could be savage and inhumane, not to mention fox hunting (which still goes on even if banned) or keeping thousands of chickens in cages in barns.

I don't think there's any point in one culture pointing fingers at another and saying "that's unnecessarily cruel". I'm not saying what they're doing is alright, just that we're not exactly on the moral high ground here.

i promised myself never to watch that video again and i've seen a worse one :( unspeakable stuff, really did rock me. i don't mind if they HAVE to take the animals fur but atleast do it quickly. robbing an animal of its fur is one thing, making it suffer unecessarily is another. the worst thing is he takes the animals fur and then simply throws the corpse onto a pile while it's still alive. total disrespect for the life.
 
I thought my ethical eating was basically 'don't eat endangered species'. I'll add 'don't eat stuff that's still alive' to the list.

lol are you kidding? They keep several dogs/cats in cages built for one and hit them through the cage before killing it. You really think they'd see our chicken farms as inhumane?.....
 
to all of you totally enraged about these fish being fried and then eaten alive, i'm assuming also feel a similar level of hatred towards bears in the wild, who eat salmon raw and live as they snatch them out of the water/air?
 
They are ALL eaten. That's the difference.
We Far-Eastern might not be as westernised as you guys on the supermarket to table ethics BUT we all know the origins of our food. We all know what they are and how they are served up to our table and we eat it clean. (*NB We stands for majority of us, not an absolute)

Not sure where does Fox Hunting (along with many many other animals hunted over the years during the British colonial era) that ended up dead for sports.

Just because one culture believe in going Vegetarian (e.g. Hindu/Buddhist), you don't see them pointing finger at others who eat meat. Through my eyes, we should be able to eat anything and everything we can eat, provided they are sustainable i.e. not endangered.

I don't hear a lot of commotion made about the British method of producing Veal. Besides, there are different views on whether fish actually feel 'pain' like us. Fishes do not have the same nociceptive system as most animals, more of a reactive reflex than a pain stimulus.

That's not as worse as what is done in the video and also a bear is a wild animal, not an intelligent human.

Nothing is as disgusting as these chinese doing that, people who do that are scum of the earth and should be killed themselves. Primitive ******** they are...

And what about the boiling of lobsters?
They are not killed immediately, they can be alive in there for up to 5mins.

Granted the video have shown the Chinese diners poking the fish - but wouldn't you if you were told the fish will be served lived, but cooked? They were more intrigued for the first min and then started eating, more than anything.

I'd not eat it, I'd walk out and refuse to pay. I'm not just refering to the fish now, the video of those various animals being skinned alive, absoloutly disgusting, scumbags the lot of em.

I was talking about the fish eating, not the animal furs. People have accepted that mammals feel pain for much longer than fish.

Rats causes diseases etc and we do our best to kill them humainly, this is just torture, I really do admire the Japs and chinese, in many way amazing cultures but at the same time they fail.

Eating a dog would be an acceptable difference in culture. Torture aint.

Tradition or not, logic should previal.

Just because you've watched Finding Nemo, don't make all fishes personified as humans. Yes, I have a degree of empathy for the fish being served that way but that's how it's done (as a specialised dish).

Torture would be the production of White Veal!

Anyone ever seen how the koreans prep cats for cooking?
I remember watching this as part of a Life Studies lesson when i was in school

1) Take fresh cat throw it into pot of boiling water
2) Wait a few mins
3) taking still alive cat out of boiling water
4) run a knife down the cats stomach lightly
5) pull the cats skin off in 1 quick movement
6) throw cat into vat of cold water
7) cat still alive but gasping for air, drowns
