Chinese Moon Cake

I haven't eaten a moon cake since I was a little'un, when the mouthful I swallowed bounced after about 5 seconds :D

Haven't been tempted to try them since, strangely enough. If I'm honest I can't remember what they taste like now, but I remember it being very, very odd. I don't get on with sweet Asian food in general.

Nothing like mochi.

They look a bit like a pork pie but with softer pastry and a pattern stamped on top. Filled with a soft and a bit crumbly sweetened bean/seed paste. Can have lotus seeds and salted whole yolks in them.

They're nice but I'd put them in xmas pudding category of an event food rather than something you'd eat regularly.

Don't think I've had a lotus seed one in forever, only mung bean ones.

I actually find them not that sweet... But very dense and doughy, hard to chew and swallow if you take too big a bite. I do enjoy them if I take my time with a cup of tea though. We used to be gifted them when partners would visit our office from Asia.

Might be something to do with my hugely desensitised sweet tooth though. I basically like sugary pop, boiled sweets, cheap biscuits... Anything full of pure sugar rather than naturally sweet flavours :P
