Just went to Pret to pick up a sandwich for lunch and decided to pay by card. The wee fella behind the till swiped my card and handed it back to me with my receipt...but I never even typed in my PIN.

What's all that about? Doesn't that just completely negate the supposed security that chip and PIN provides?

That's not chip and pin, that's just -master of the obvious- the normal procedure...maybe because the payment was very low they don't require CnP

Thats how it used to be done, no?

Cept he didnt hand you the receipt to sign? When you put a card through that way it pints a receipt and then pops up with a message on the screen asking if the receipt has been signed.

Yeah i think cnp is only 'required' over like £40 or something, just 99% of places chose to do it regardless, where as some wont!

P.O.S's will need the pin no matter how much the amount is. Our readers at work will ask for pin numbers even if it's 45p.

Keep a close eye on your bank account dude, sound suspicious.

It was the same with the Tesco self service tills for a while, under a certain amount and you just swiped the card and it gave a receipt.

Lots of places don't use chip and pin. For example, if you use the self service checkouts at tesco, you just swipe your card. I believe they have (or will shortly) introduce pin keypads, but previously you didn't need to enter it, nor sign anything. Nothing to worry about.

all the tescos round here have cnp on their self scan checkouts - but when I buy petrol I don't need pin or to sign anything.

Well if it was cnp then you put the chip in and wait while the transaction is autherised. If it was the old way he would have just swiped the magnetic strip.
so which did he do?

Would they not ask for the signature for swiping?

no it's not that simple... depending on the machine some places "swipe" the card so it loooks like he swiped the strip, but there is a device in there which is actually reading the chip...

although the card stays in the "swipe" device i think...

We have those at my work. You have to "swipe and park" - swipe it, then a pin reader clicks in as you hit the bottom of the swipe, and you leave the card there until the POS has finished.

Ah, sorry. :)

Ive only ever seen ones with a place to insert for chip and swip for the magetic strip.

I think:

Swipe = any fraud (i.e. ** using a stolen cc) the shop will need to repay there own losses.

C&P = and fraud and the bank will pay them the money back.

Its up to the shop if they use it or not?

Maby this was just for the change over and mite be compulsary now?
