Chipageddon...

Is this Ireland again?

No, not specific to Ireland, this is on the BBC News website.

I just found it interesting that in the OCUK forums / gamers / PC builder space, we are well aware of hardware shortages but the reasons are far beyond 'miners stealing our GPUs' - lot's of industries are placing more demand on factories to produce chips that has repercussions for lowly peasants like us.

Sadly, there are shortages in lots of electronic component types, and it's down to the huge growth of electronics into various markets. Further, it's not just an automotive thing, but the automotive companies tend to have it worst as need to use AEC-Q components and these got through extra testing, quality control and burn in before being sold. Also, in my experience automotive companies tend to be huge and throw their political weight around, often acting like children, but then I only worked for them for a few years.

I'm currently dealing with several components (diodes, FETs, resistors, caps) that have gone limited supply or not available with very little notice.

Is it an apocalyptic situation? No. It's a pain in the arse and there are going to be shortages for a few years while supply comes inline with demand. That means certain products won't be available as you would expect. Meh.
