Kind of in a teeth talking mood, just asked a question in the teeth whitening thread as well. Basically I've never been completely happy with my teeth. I know they're a lot better than other people's and I'm always in and out at the dentist within a minute or two, but i'm a bit of a perfectionist and nice teeth are extremely important to me. Here's a pic (best I could find without sticking the camera in my mouth), with the usual red eye:

I have a chip on one of my front teeth (right of the two in the pic, can't see it really in the picture) which i've always wanted filling in some way. And I also want whiter teeth. In regard to the chip, I was at the dentist the other day and they said they could do something about it for £44, but they never really explained what this was. Any ideas? I'd have it done but i'm too worried about it not blending in perfectly, I'd want it to look like it had never been chipped to begin with. Anyone ever had anything similar done? It seems too cheap for it to be a good job.

I've had my front one done...about 3 times now?

When I was younger, I managed to chip it on the top of a pickup lorry....yeah exactly :p

But I had what they call a cap on it...it fell out a couple of times when I was younger due to bashing my head or falling over REALLY hard.

So I left it...then about 3 years ago maybe? I chipped the already chipped tooth...and just got SO fed up with it.

So the guy put a cap on it, and shaped it a fair amount and matched it with my other front tooth. (colour wise / 'see through' wise if you know what I mean.)

And since then, it hasen't come out or anything, and I seem to be doing ok with it.

When I had it done though, my god it look ridiculously big....but that's cause I hadn't had a cap on there for a good five years before...and the fact it mae my mouth feel weird due to the extra tooth area on my front lip, but you soon get used to it :)

I'll try get some pics up though.

I can't see the chip at all, so I don't know how severe it is. However, I have a similar chip on my left front tooth about 1.5mm across I'd guess.

I got told by an NHS dentist that a cap would set me back around £350 if I remember correctly.

rofl...jesus, £350?

Mine was no way near that much...

It all depends how bad it is really...I know one person who had to have a cap on, but he also had to have a rod thing through the tooth to keep it in.

I think it might of actually been £450 =/

Either way, perhaps I shouldn't get a second opinion.. I assumed as she was an NHS dentist all costs are standardized between practices.

I've had about 4 caps on my front tooth. it was a big chip, about a quarter of the tooth. cap was real weak and kept comin off. then they reinforced it with a titanium bar, that lasted a bit longer but eventually came off aswell.
After all that i eventually got a crown on it and it's been rock solid ever since. have had the crown about a year and a half now, couldn't be happier with it.
If i was you i'd skip the cap and go for the crown. a lot more expensive but worth it.

Both my front teeth are chipped and for crowns my NHS dentist quoted me £500 per tooth! He said it costs so much because its cosmetic rather than an actual dental problem :(

i'm sure you could get them both done for that =/ thats just silly.

What you need to do is ask how long do you want to keep your front tooth, if the chip is small then youll be fine, if you start to use butchers then you'll end up with no teeth all.

They care only about the money they dont really care about the client. My advice is go round too another 2 dentists and ask for an opinion dont tell them that you've seen any dentists, that way you'll find out which butcher does care a bit for his clients.

Putting a crown kills the tooth, if i were you ill start to do some research, new teeth technology is around the corner with trials in japan of synthetic enamel, and you want to keep your natural teeth as long as posible. Most uk dentists if not all have no idea about the new tech coming out and still use 150 year old tech to repair if you can call it that, i call it slowing down the loss of teeth, but once you start using them you'll end up losing the tooth.

If there isnt any pain then you should be find, start to use sensi sheild toothpaste or moose thats contains calcium sodium phosilicate.

Well yes, but from looking at the photo it would be a cap not a crown, and a cap doesnt do that.

Also your dissing of dentists is ridiculous, pretending that you intimately know the motives of every dentist in the country? If personal attacks werent banned on these forums id go after you with a chain saw.

a cap can also kill a tooth.
