A question for you guys. My mate has a Passat TDi 130 Sport with about 100k on the clock, and is looking to improve the performance a little bit. Has anyone had any experience of getting this engine "chipped"? Any info on costs, performance, economy differences and anything else worth knowing would be appreciated.

Chipping on the VAG diesels works very well.

I don't have much actual experience though. But I know Jez did a simple ECU mod and got very noticeable gains. (Seat Leon 1.9 TDI) and that wasnt even a chip!!

its also really worth taking all the mesh out of the AFM, youll like that mod.

i did it on mine and did about another 10k miles without fault

AMD are probably the best.
makes a difference to higher gears,
£645 fitted.

I must say these are proper remaps, which I and most VW owners will advise you on.
This involves going on a rolling road, having your current BHP measured, how suitable your car is and most importantly the map is tailered to your engine.

Our old Bora pd130 got revo'd before the headgasket went. It made a pretty immense difference, and is definately worth the money. Not only was it quicker, the torque curve was smoothen out (no more of the "surge" at 2000rpm). The power increased to around 170, which is a good gain for £400.

I had my 2002 Golf GT TDi PD 150 chipped at Revo in Daventry a couple of years ago, it kicks out about 195bhp now and I didn't notice much of a decrease to the fuel economy.

It wasn't just better at accelerating after being chipped, it was smoother so it was a nicer car to drive.

Price wise, I think it was about £500.

I am getting my own car done by upsolute next week from 110bhp to 143bhp.
This costs £260 that includes a 200+ mile round trip to come to my house.
Will post how it goes and what it is like.

Mine has been done now, there is a fair difference for sure, very impressed, the man in the new vectra CDTi, must have wondered how an old mechanical tdi Passatt, could shift so quick.
Reckon I am nearer to 150bhp now.

if anyone has a rover 200/400/600 L series engined diesel
have a look here

the guy the runs the website makes his own tuning boxes(and no before someone says , there not a resister in a box lol)
i have one fitted to my 600 diesel, power is up from 105 to around 130bhp and torque is up to around 250nm.
the car now feels like a totally different car, well worth the £50 for the tuning box

the tuning boxes also work on pre 2000 VAG 1.9TDi cars with the YP 37 injector pumps
