the fan on my northbridge packed up this morning it was a low profile one that came on the motherboard an msi diamond.i was glad in a way as it was so loud.iwent out today and got a new chipset fan and when i went to instal it it was to high and my 8800 gtx hit it .so i took the fan of and just used the new heatsink.it seems a bit warm but the pc seems to be running ok.do you think this will be ok in the long term or does anybody know of any very low chipset fans.ps the old msi fan sounded worse than a cemment mixer.

If you have good case cooling then it should be ok.

Depends on the case cooling & overclock you have.

Can you sit an 80mm or 12mm fan somewhere inside the case to blow air over the heatsink?

i think i have overcome the problem but still need some help.the heatsink was ok untill i tried to play a game then the pc locked up.i took the msi fan apart and put the new fan in its housing it works fine now with new paste.the thing is i cannot get the thing to stick to the motherboard propperly.the plugs wont go back in so i have used match sticks.this seems to have done the job but it seems a bit of a bodge.the msi plugs seem to be some spring loaded type and i think i broke them getting the fan out.i am wondering will the paste harden and hold the fan tight.

You could try a couple of M3 sized bolts.

Just be sure to use plastic washers on each side of the board.
