Apparantly services.exe was missing so the pc couldn't start, so I booted into repair mode and ran chkdsk, it got to 50% and then said the drive has 1 or more unrecoverable errors.
I've had HDDs fail with this sort of thing in the past. I've had mixed results from DBANing them - but this does wipe EVERYTHING from your disk and it's a good idea to disconnect any HDDs you don't want to nuke (just in case )
