Last night I ate a load of roses before I went to bed and I lied in bed for at least 2 hours before falling asleep. On Monday I did the same but yesterday I didnt have any and seemed to go to sleep straight away.

Does eating chocolate before bed increase energy levels through the sugar (or something else) and keep you awake?

Yes, hence why parents try not to give kids cola or sweets before bedtime or anytime else that they want them to calm down.

Cheese is another bad idea as it takes a while to digest so your stomach doesnt settle very quickly

Chocolate contains sugar and caffeine, so yes, they will give you a short energy boost. Nothing major, but usually enough to delay you falling to sleep as quick as you normally do.

Is this the first time you've eaten chocolate?

a fair amount of it at 1am. yes

Tea has twice the caffeine content of coffee. Chocolate has five times that of tea.

Not a good thing to have before trying to get to sleep.

really? no wonder I had a crappy nights sleep!

It's a fact, happened to me on Tuesday night after I ate a whole box of 15 tofeffe in about 10 minutes and then half an hour later went to bed. Was wide awake for at least an hour and a half when normally I'm off to sleep in minutes.

Source? Seems interesting to say the least.

Seems I was wrong about the order of the tea and the coffee (depending on type) but the chocolate is the clear winner, which was my point (although it still isn't anywhere near 5x :o :(). See here for comparitive caffeine contents (though the amount it's taken from isn't standardised for some reason, so it isn't as clear-cut as it looks).

// EDIT //

I've standardised it:

Caffeine content (mg/oz - dry weight, I assume):
Average brewed coffee - 11.25 (strong - 15)
Average tea - 3.75
Dark chocolate - 20 (milk - 6)

WOWZA!

Is there any food that is good to HELP you sleep then?

I find myself playing BF2 @ 1am eating a mars bar, and obviously thats not good! (Although I do brush my teeth before bed :D)

Theres gotta be something to snack on during a game that doesnt keep you awake after!
