Chocolate?

The Spurs v Port Vale during the week went into extra-time. At the end of 90 mins the Spurs coaching staff were walking around giving the players what appeared to be chocolate bars. They also showed this on the Nick Hancock footy show.

I wonder why they would hand these out? Surely an Isotonic sports drink would be superior with possibly some amino's in?

An energy bar would basically be 100% carbohydrates and presumably quick release to give the players as much fuel as possible for the final minutes, whereas chocolate, while containing lots of sugar which has the desired effect, has lots of undesirable stuff in too.
 
Chocolate bar, chocolate covered glucose, energy bar are all basically the same thing and can do the same job. All will give a relatively quick boost of energy and replenish glycogen stores with their simple carbs.

My question originally was why give out solid food (energy bar, chocolate, whatever) as opposed to isotonic sports drinks. Solids will take longer to perform their job and would cause the body to use up vital energy digesting them.

I'm obviously missing something that they know and I don't. I'd like to know.
 
i eat jaffa cakes by the 12 pack whilst playing football manager. keeps me keenly watching the action for hours lol!

plus jaffa's have only 1 g of fat per cake, and LOTS of sugar so ideal for munch actually!

a 12 pack sill has 600 cals in it... which is a fair wack of your daily intake

it's 1g of fat and 50cals, like i said soon adds up! :p


48 x 50 = 2400 (you total cal intake for the day)
