I'm planning to buy a car within the next couple of months or so. Although I could describe myself as being reasonably well-paid, holidays and travel has always been the main source of my spending - more than even my house.

Therefore, with a car being third in my spending priorities, I think it would be really unwise to get a brand new car, especially with the deprecation. I'm looking for a nice second-hand German car in good condition - but with money in mind, I want a model that is relatively new and won't be replaced within the next three years or so, as well as a reasonable spec list including leather (therefore keeping the demand and value generally high).

I don't realy fancy VW and Audi, so I'm looking at a mid-sized BMW or Merc, ideally the 5er or E-Class (or maybe the CLK), as I think the 3er and C-Class are too widespread and will lose value more than less-widespread models.

However, this may be a bit of a bad time to buy a Merc, as there's a lot of new models going out around now (new C-Class in mid-2007...I don't know about the E-Class or the CLK, but I'm sure they're around the corner). The new 5er was released relatively recently so they won't be releasing a new one any time soon, except for a facelift.

But, of course, I could be wrong about any of the above - so I'd appreciate any opinions or comments you have...5er, E-Class, CLK (or any other cars you think would be good)....if I had to name a budget, I'd say around 23 to 25k, possibly one or two grand over that - but I have to remember the running costs, fuel and insurance and so on, as well as the resell value and deprecation - so, the lower, the better.

I have a C estate (yes I know) and have been told by the actuarial types that work out the lease prices and residual values that the C Estate is second to the Mini in terms of low depreciation.

Having said that, if it's a merc, it's got to be a 6+ cylinders - the 1.8 in a 180/200/240 even if it does give 190bhp max is too thrashy. E320 for a single person? You'll look like you are on your way to Gatwick with a piece of cardboard with "Mr Smith" written on it! I don't know about BMW's but the Mercs really do hold their value in general - and for a bit of fun check out the AMG section in Pistonheads classifieds.

Good luck!

Don't count out the big audis without looking at them. The new shape A6 is meant to be a very good car and the A8 could net you a bargin (considering how much they would be new).

As for the cars you have specified I know know about the mercs but the 530D and 530I seem to be in the good books on here.

The 5, E and CLK are all nice cars and should all depreciate at similar rates I would have thought. My advice would be drive all 3 and make your choice as based on previous history this thread is likely to get the following responses:

1: You can get much better cars for that money
2: Buy the 5 Series
3: Why do you want to spend so much money
4: Can I see a loaf of bread on your pay packet
5: I have heard "insert statement of conjecture here"
6: Go to Pistonheads
7: Didn't you ask the same question last month
8: Don't ignore the Audi (which is actually very good advice, the new A6 is lovely too!)
9: What you trying to prove
10: Anyone see the Hamster on Top Gear, didn't he look old

Sorry for the flipent response, I'm having one of those days where everywhere I turn I am confronted by idiots (and I don't mean on this forum!).

Best of luck!

:D

Apparently, the new E model will be released in 2009, so that's bound to be a good option if I'll be having it for around 2 and a half years (yeah, I never fancy something if there's a newer model out...go me  :p). Auto slushboxes are almost universal on Mercs, and the manual ones are supposed to be a bit iffy - but I was in a manual Merc taxi once, and it seemed ok. Anyone have an experience of a manual Merc? Probably 1 in every 3,000 Merc drivers use manual but it's worth a try :p
