Hello,

This is my first post here, hopefully you can help me with a few questions I have :)

Im buying a new system soon, the specs are:

2GB geil DDR2 800mhz (only thing I actually have so far)
e6600 Conroe (going to OC, with some kind of aftermarket cooler; scythe or something)
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Hiper modular 580 watt PSU

However I cant decide on GFX card to get for it. I was thinking of X1900XT 512mb, but it is a tad expensive for what I was intending to spend, so I think my other options are:

  • X1800XT 512mb
  • X1900XT 256mb
  • Crossfire 2x 1600 Pro

The problem is im no expert on this, how important is it that I get a 512mb card? If you think I should get another card altogether, do please say.

Basically I want my PC card to do this:

Play games at 1280 res (although I will be using dual mon with 2nd monitor running at 1152 res, however this simply displays windows ;)). I also intend to use the computer for some video/game editing, although nothing seriously hefty :), which is why Ive chosen the CPU/ram.

I want the card to last for maybe a year, when I will get some kind of DX10 card that is actually used for something. My idea of "last" is something that will get at least 30-40fps (preferably more of course!) on a typical game at high settings by the time I want to get the dx10 cards.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the 1800 512, since I'm not sure if the 256mb of memory on the 1900 will cut it (please by all means correct me if I'm wrong;))

Im completely lost as to how a pair of 1600 pros 512mb will perform, however this is seems to be the cheapest option, so worth a look at (?)

Other thing I could do is wait for first dx10 cards come out to make dx9 cards cheaper, how much do you think they would drop? I realise this is a hard to question to answer, but based on past releases is it possible to guess at all?

Please help me! :D

Cheers, Sam

Get the X1900XT 256MB without a doubt if it's within your budget, ignore what Snoops said about memory because you said you'll be using one display purely for Windows.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Also forgot to mention that i'll be getting vista when it is released and I imagine that will take more GFX memory with the new Aero interface etc?

The way I see it, the 1800 512mb has twice the memory and only a bit slower GPU than the 1900 256, but if you really think the 1900 256 is better, I'll go that way. Im still considering the X1900XT 512mb, but it really needs to be well worth it to stretch that far, bearing in mind my "needs" I wrote.

Cheers :D

btw any idea when DX10 cards are actually going to be out and how much cheaper DX9 cards will be then? (just roughly ofc :))
