Gah, I didn't realize there was such a small difference in price between the 9600 and the 8800 GT *not reading the thread completely for the ultimate win* ;)
 
If the extra money is available get the 8800GT as it's a better card. However you wouldn't be losing a lot of performance from picking up the 9600GT, so if funds are a bit tight right now then go for the 9600GT with confidence. This will run World in Conflict better than the first two choices anyway. ATI aren't too great with this game and AA. With my 2900Pro overclocked past XT speeds the game was really smooth until you added AA. I was playing at 1600x1200 with 2xAA and it was a decent experience. Take AA off and it's a lot faster. Nvidia don't get this hit with AA like the ATI card so I think you'll fairly enjoy whatever GT you end up with :).

Lol aye :D. With a budget and other choices it makes it a lot easier now :).

Also I agree on saving up but drawing the line. 8800GT for saving and the 9600GT for drawing the line. Both are excellent cards and better than the first two.
 
Thanks fellas for all the help so far certainly provided some good info here to help me decide.

I can afford the PNY 9600GT 512MB here at OcUK easily on Monday. Maybe able to raise another £30 quid if I can!

If this is the case how would the 8800GT stack up against the 3870XT 512MB as they'd be in my price range.

Right, basically you can afford:

1)8800GT (no AA or AF crysis 1920x1200 = 30 fps, COD 4 1920x1200 = 80fps)
2)9600GT (no AA or AF crysis 1920x1200 = 18 fps, COD 4 1920x1200 = 59fps)
3)3850 Pro 512 mb
4)8800GTS 320 mb

Ive ranked them in order of best to worst, you can afford them all, so obviously choose the best one :D. Yay! I've also showed you what the extra £17 gets you when you get the 8800GT. Finished now yes?

Great post and helpful too :). Do you have any results from 1280x1024 for both the 8800GT and 9600GT with and without AA/AF?.
 
8800GT = 48 fps with 1280x1024 2xAF
9600GT = 43 fps with 1280x1024 2xAF

So basically the higher the res the more the 8800GT shines, just gnerally £17 is really gunna give you that edge, go for it :)

Ah cool, no problem m8y ;).

I was a bit surprised myself but at that resolution it's fair play that the 9600GT starts to choke as from it's specs you wouldn't even think it would be capable of what it can do.

I did find this with the 9600GT and 8800GT compared and it's a bit closer at smaller resolutions.

That's the first game tested so just keep going to the next page to see the rest of the game benchmarks.

I've got £150 on me to spend on a Graphics Card now, so whats it to be ordering first thing in the morning now that my budget is up.

Hi Mista :).

What I'd do is first think about if I'm ever going to upgrade my screen to a resolution higher than 1680x1050 and if you think it might happen during the time you have your new graphics card then the GTS 512mb will be a decent choice. However if you think you're going to be at 1280x1024 for a good while then the 8800GT would be cheaper with the same results.

The 8800GT can be good for 1920x1200 in some titles. It's just in some situations that it will struggle a bit more than a GTS with AA at higher resolution just like the 512mb GTS can be limited compared to the 8800GTX. In the titles that are not affected you can see a GT at 1920x1200 with 4xAA and 16xAF running just a few FPS behind a GTX but again with it being title dependant you'd never know if you are going to be limited unless you read review after review and that the GT has been tested on the game you are wanting to play.

If a 22" screen with 1680x1050 resolution would be the next screen you get then get the 8800GT. If a 24" screen with 1920x1200 then get the GTS.
 
I'll be sticking to a 19" for some time to be honest so it's going to be 1280x1024 for awhile. I've got the cash in the bank now so it's decision time so I can get it today for a tomorrow delivery.

I've just had a look at your case and it'll be fine. I'm using a ThermalTake Kandalf case and your case looks just as wide as mine does and I have plenty space with the slightly longer GTX.

So, what card did you order? :).
 
Hi Mista Gee.

I take it you're not one for overclocking then?. If so then that card is perfect for you as well as having an excellent warranty. The reason I'm asking is that you could have got a cheaper BFG for £122 which isn't as overclocked as the card you have bought but could be pushed to same speeds with a little use of Rivatuner no problem and the BFg card has just as good warranty as EVGA.

If you just want to plug and play with no messing about then you have made the right choice and I hope you enjoy your new card when it comes.

Would you post here to tell us how you are liking the card after you try it out?.
 
I'd of got a BFG one as J.D said at 18 or so quid cheaper as they can all overclock to 650Mhz, but too expensive for a GT especially when for an extra 15 quid you are in GTS 512 territory.
