Choosing a Build

Hi,

Below are three builds which are all relatively the same except from the CPU. In the future I plan to get another 980 and fully water cool the whole system hence the very large case (which is also why I don't mind the DDR4 stick having no heat spreader as I can just water cool it later). The cooler for the 5820k is just the cheapest AiO I could find and for the other two Z97 CPU's I will just use the stock cooler until water cooled or if that isn't good enough i'll just pick up a separate cooler later on. I will be mostly gaming on the rig however I will most likely end up using virtual machines, doing a lot of coding and some video editing and rendering on it. I want the rig to be as future proof as possible as I want it too last me through Uni and then a while after and would really be grateful for any reasoning of which one I should go for.

Hi,

Firstly you'll have to remove the prices as its against the Forum rules (we can tell where its from).

Secondly i don't think you've got the specs correct atall. Not that they won't work, they may do, just not as they should. Your issue is RAM.

LEt me try and explain. The Z97 chipset (aswell as all the latest mainstream sockets) run Dual Channel Memory(configurations). This means (very basically) that the data is processed by two stick of ram simultaneously/sequentially. Only having one stick of RAM means its will work in single channel mode only. This will decrease your performance.

X99 is an even bigger issue, as AGAIN you've specced a SINGLE RAM stick, rather than wha required for the chipset. X99 work on QUAD CHANNEL RAM, meaning its realies on 4 sticks of RAM. 4x4GB kits are readily available.

Im not actually sure WHY places are selling SINGLE DDR4 Sticks as DDR4 is uses solely on X99, which is a Quad channel platform. Never mind.

I think i could put you a decent spec together. What is you're OVERALL TOP (and ideal) budget? Is it just the tower you need?

I'm not sure I've seen anyone water cool RAM before. Can you even get water blocks for it?

My top budget is around £2000 with 2 980's

Yeh just look on EK's site, they have modules which you can attach to any RAM stick and then water cool them.

The case I want is the Phanteks Enthoo Primo and I want the monitor included either 4k or 1440p. OS isn't a issue.

Not for gaming, the 4790K runs at a faster speed out of the box and games wont make full use of all the cores on X99.
