First of all, Hello.

I recently had the thought of upgrading my computer and I’ve started to make a bit of headway in getting an idea of what I want/need and so on. My budget started off at around £700 but has since grown into a considerably bigger figure.

I started off wanting the P4 3.6Ghz 800Mhz FSB (775) and as something of a novice back then – I thought that clock speed was the be all and end all of performance – thanks to some guidance and several articles on AMD, I’ve just about come round to the idea, that it isn’t the case.

After another recommendation – I had a look at the Pentium D 805 – and the possible idea of over-clocking of it, up to and around 3.8Ghz/4.00Ghz. I have never over-clocked before and although it’s something I would like to learn a bit more about – I opted out of it.

I didn’t want to be worry about temperatures and cooling so much so that it would become an annoyance for me. I figured that if I’m going to over-clock, and particularly as a first time – I would do it on a processor that I could juice up a tiny bit – but not a 2.66Ghz to 4.0Ghz leap. I don’t believe in water cooling (I know it gets results, but I don’t like it) so I wasn’t going to hit 4.0 GHz, anyway.

After rejecting the idea of that – I then had a quick glance over at AMD. It was the first real time I had considered AMD, but the lack of cache and low clock speeds always puts an element of doubt into my mind – despite it being dual core and having read hundreds of good reviews about AMD Dual Core pros.

So I sort of considered AMD and sort of didn’t – when you compare that to the Intel experiences.

I then heard of the Conroe processor and thought if I was going to give dual core a chance – it may as well be with Intel. I had picked out everything I believed I needed to fit the Conroe (2.67GHz, I believe) system – but later found that out that the board manufacturers (Asus) didn’t specify on their website whether it will be supporting Conroe or not – some of the other motherboards on their website had specifications saying they did. I’m already on £150 for the motherboard that I picked out, which I believed to be pretty expensive. If I had to go beyond £150 to get a Conroe-supported motherboard, then it would really be breaking the neck of my budget – as it’s sitting around the £900 mark, everything barring casing and cooling considered.

I understand that AMD plan a big cut of pricing when the Conroe is released and whilst part of me wants a Conroe – I don’t want to have to wait longer than is necessary, to get it bought and paid for. The AMD price cut also gives me something else to think about and whilst it’s a good thing – It’s something that has been wrecking my head for the last week or so.

Depending on where you go, either Intel or AMD are the leading processor and in reality – it’s hard to form a decent opinion of your own. Backhand payments and generally bias toward one manufacturer, from the creators of these articles, being the problem.

The specs of my inital ‘proposed’ new system were as follows:

Motherboard: Asus P5WD2-E Premium 975 x LGA 775 2 X PCI-E 16x
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 660 3.6Ghz Socket 775 800Mhz 2mb Retail Boxed
Memory: Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM XMS2-6400 CL5
Graphics Card: XFX 7900GT 256MB DDR3 DUAL DVI PCI-E
Storage: 2x Maxtor 6V160E0 160GB SATA300 7200rpm 8MB Cache - OEM
CD Drive: Sony CRX230E 52x32x52 CD-RW Internal IDE (Black) - OEM
DVD Drive: Sony DWG120AB2 16XDVD/RW/RAM Internal Black - OEM

*I’m pretty sure all of these are compatiable, but not 100%

The only things that would be changing would be the processor and motherboard – possibly the memory too as I believe DDR2 isn’t supported on AMD as of yet.

As the graphics card would suggest – I’m pretty much interested in gaming. I understand that people like to play games and rip DVD’s/Mp3’s whilst they play – but I’m not so much interested in that and usually let my game take up as much of the resources as possible.

The multitasking element can involve Photoshop (which I’ve heard AMD doesn’t like playing with?), Firefox, MSN Messenger, virus/firewall protection and Windows Media Player all running at the same time – which I understand Dual Core enjoys taking on as a challenge.

To be honest, I slightly favour Intel as a company. With all respect to AMD, I’ve used Intel on every computer I’ve ever had and very rarely have I had genuine performance problems. Whilst my shyness to leave Intel could be a bad thing for those who believe strongly in AMD – I have a track record with them and AMD is seen as the "something unknown".

The problem doesn’t really boil down to whether Conroe works on the motherboard I have selected – it’s about much more than that.

Anyway, what was very long-winded – but if you’re still with me. I’d just like to hear your suggestions, comments, opinions and views – as I’m sure it will help me sort out what is the best thing to do.

Thanks for any help - It's appreciated.

Apologies about posting the links - I had that block of text with links on a notepad file and I just brought it over for convenience purposes. So no harm intended there.

fenderbass86, in regards to those new motherboards you mention - what sort of wait time is expected to be on them? I assume that Intel will have had a word in the ear of many motherboard manufacturers for obvious reasons and that the wait time won't be that long - before or after Conroe's release.

I've heard "change from Maxtor" a few times - both in my case and the case of others. I have Maxtor drives (slave and primary) in this one and haven't had much trouble personally - but what would be the recommended branding for the current market? I heard Samsung drives were both good and noise efficient - but I'm just passing on another opinion to be honest.

If I was to overclock Conroe, it wouldn't be by a great deal - I know people can push processors to the limit, but I don't think I would ever be content with that on a personal level - worrying too much about temps. and the dark side that comes with overclocking. Needless to say - I would like to be able to give it a bit of a kick when the newer and faster processor speeds are being released, after I do finally buy mine.

I intend to get the buying underway pretty soon - Obviously I won't be buying any items of great importance - but I assume it would be alright to buy off the optical drives and storage drives (possibly not Maxtor, as mentioned) for now? Or would it be better to save it all up and buy everything in the one go - and sort of fit things round the motherboard itself?

Cheers for the welcome, as well. Very nice site here.

Probably best to buy it all in one go - as you say. Especially given the fact that there's an added charge to where I live (Northern Ireland). That is always fun when a £3.12 NIC is £21.23 just before confirmation of order...

Part of me wants to have something to look at in the corner. Silly, but that's me.

I'll go on your word then and wait - I wanted the Conroe - but at the same time didn't want to pay through the teeth for a motherboard.

I am thinking of the E6600 myself. I wouldn't say I'm worried about overclocking - just not overclocking to a degree where water cooling may come into play. I don't want to be the likes of 0.3Ghz away from needing water cooling - I'd prefer the system to be running cooler than that. If that makes any sense.

In regards to cases - what would you suggest in the way of a brand? I'm thinking about around £50 for a case - is that reasonable or would it make sense to make the case a good one and pushing the price barrier up a bit?

Will check those cases out - Cheers.

On the subject of PSU's, I do have one.

It's a Hiper 480W (4M480)

Would that be enough or would something a bit heftier be more suitable?

Two things -

Will the motherboard for the Conroe be ATX?

And is Armor Jr. (VC3000BWS) a good brand of case?

Without straying away from the topic in the wrong forum - I'm after a case with cooling and looks as preference, as opposed to 'noise' or lack of it - if I plan to overclock the CPU - would it just be enough to have a cooler strapped onto it, or is the case going to need to be ice-like as well?

The AJ seems like a very nice case, looks wise and it seems well ventilated as well - but I'm obviously no expert in the field of either casing or oc'ing and was wondering what the view was on the case?

To dig this up or re-open an old wound - I'm beginning to piece together the system - I've got this so far:

Motherboard:
Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)
CPU Cooler:
Memory: Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM XMS2-6400 CL5
Graphics Card: XFX 7900GT 256MB DDR3 DUAL DVI PCI-E
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB ST3400620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-083-SE)
CD Drive: Sony CD-RW/DVD Combo 52x32x52x16x Internal OEM Black
DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S182D 18x18 DVD±RW ReWriter (Black) (CD-078-SA)
Case: Thermaltake VB1000BWS Soprano SuperMidi Tower - Black (CA-015-TT)

And a few other bits and pieces.

I could have swore someone suggested a CPU cooler - but seems not. Feel free to fire some at me.

As for the motherboard, the ones Jokester suggested a while ago seem to be the leading candidates - I have about £200 to play with so I can just go out and get one - should it fit into all my needs of course. I'm having a bit of trouble picking through all of the details - but I need one that:

  1. Must be OverClock Friendly.
  2. Supports SATA
  3. Supports IDE
  4. Supports 800MHz RAM (4 slots, preferably)
  5. Supports Dual Core 2 (preferably w/out bios updates)
  6. Three PCI Slots or more
  7. PCI-Express Slot For The Graphics Card
  8. £170 Max.
  9. And probably a lot more information that I have failed to mention

I'll obviously continue to look about for motherboards that fit that - but if you happen to know one - then do gimme a shout.

In regards to cables and that - am I to be expected to get my own or will the seller provide them? A case full of components and only power leads isn't as cluttered, but I don't think it'll work as well. :D

And the rest of the money, it will hopefully see over delivery and bits and bobs.

Mobo (whichever you choose) comes with all the cables you need. Screws, standoffs, etc come with case (& some DVD±Writers come with own screws)

Cheers hp. I'll probably opt for some pretty colourful ones if I take a mad notion - but wasn't sure where I would stand if I didn't buy them at the moment.

From what I've gathered, the Ultra 120 and Scythe Ninja range seem to be the most favoured CPU coolers. I must say, both are absolute brutes in terms of thier sizes - but having taken several glances at this case, I can see that it would probably fit into a case alright - still massive though.

If anyone can give the thumbs or even thumbs to any of those - it would be a good job. I'm sort of hoping to get the computer finalized for today and possibly ordered - in good time for packing and all of that lark.

Granted I still have a motherboard to get and a few peripherals too.
