Chopping boards - what do you use?

40mm thick oak 1m x 0.5m, funny enough the size of my sink cutout....

Been great, though i do cut and prep raw meat on some plastic Joseph Joseph chopping boards, which then get thrown in the dishwasher.

I made a bunch of Chopping boards from Offcuts left over after our Kitchen was installed a couple of years ago.

Sealed with multiple coats of food safe Oil... never had any issues.

I got someone to make me a black walnut end grain board on ebay and its been great. To keep it clean you just need to give it a wipe over with a damp towel after use, or rinse under the tap and then dry straight away. Obviously no dish washer, or soaking in the sink. If you use it with meat then you'll need to use soap and then oil it more often to keep topping it up.

I also made some beeswax paste which does a great job of protecting it and can be quickly wiped on after each use. To make it you just mix food grade beeswax and mineral oil 50/50 in a bowl, and then put it into a pan of hot water until the beeswax melts. Then transfer to a tub and once it sets, it'll be a soft paste.

some wooden one that I oil.
just a solid peice of wood, nothing intricate looking or cool,Think it cost like 40quid.

but a good one lasts years so can see why some people spend money on them, broken down to per year its not much

Typing that title made me realise how old I’m getting….

Need some new chopping boards, been using the Joseph and Joseph colour coded plastic ones for a few years but they’re in need of replacing.

Does anybody use a large butchers block style board? I want a large wooden board but I have no idea how you’re supposed to keep them clean? Surely they just get filled with microscopic bits of food in the grain etc?

Which boards are best for not destroying my knives?

Wood is actually more hygienic than plastic for chopping boards and won’t blunt your knife.

Wipe it clean after each use with hot soapy water and use food safe mineral oil on it every now and again. Will last a lifetime!

No need to buy anything fancy, just a bamboo type chopping board should do the job.
