Hi all :-)

I've recently picked up an SSD to enjoy the rewards of rapidity. However, I'm finding Windows 7 to be quite a bit more massive than I was anticipating.

OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

Therefore - is there anything you can say, flat out delete that the general user would never use, and isn't absolutely critical for the functionality of windows?

Looking to save a few GB here and there if possible.

Any tips / suggestions welcome,

Thanks~

Google Windows 7 Lite and you will get info

tech-tutors.co.cc - have a tutorial I believe

I have heard that is good, gets rid of all the bloatware from Win 7, includes IE8 if you don't want it.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Need to do some basic stuff aswell like moving temp internet files/page file to another hdd.

Also, disable hibernation - will save some GB, especially if you hibernete your pc ona regular basis - are you putting your documents and data on a seperate drive?

Got OS and 2 games on my 60gb vertex2, and 2 250gb's in raid0 for everything else. Just need to try and figure out how to get windows to dump pretty much everything else on the hdd's.

Didnt think of hibernation - I never use it, so if its not disabled already then thats definitely a start.

Whats the point of putting all your temp folders and everything else on the slower drive? Windows and programs use the temp folders all the time. So put them on the fast drive.

My 80GB Intel has a full Windows 7 64 bit install, all the temp folders, all my applications and user data and a 6GB pagefile. I still have almost 20GB free. Oh, I also have almost 20GB of games on it too. :)

By all means move your data and any massive programs that don't really benefit from an SSD [games are a good example, but I only ever have a couple installed at a time, so shove em on my SSD]. Just don't fret about saving every last GB as it is pointless. 60GB is plenty and it is stupid to not use every last byte of it.

I was mainly trying to get a little bit of a buffer at the end as I've read SSD's lose performance when they're approaching capacity. I see your point about the temp files etc however.

I dont come anywhere near 8gb of RAM though with what I use my comp for so I can probably afford to ditch the pagefile.

Don't ditch the pagefile. It will cause crashes down the line. It is not an overflow. All sorts of stuff will get paged, even if you have plenty of actual RAM spare. No pagefile = instability.

You can reduce the size of your pagefile if you wish - as 8GB is pretty big.

If you install games away from the SSD, you could in theory have 20-30GB free depending on what applications you install. I would have almost 40GB free without Starcraft II and Fallout 3 :D
