How does it perform?
For a £399 device it performs quite good. When I pick a product to own, I don't really look at numbers as with the Mojo, that doesn't matter. I have a regular dealer I use and we always have a good chat when I purchase a product and I was talking to him about numbers; mainly gain, power, mW etc. I told him going by numbers the device doesn't really seem that impressive..but I also said but I'm assuming that's not the case here it it?
He replied with something I completely agree with which was numbers do not matter, it's how it sounds that counts.
He described the Mojo as something that runs on emotion, I could relate as my Nighthawk and HD650 both run on emotion with the HD650 having the technical capability that runs along side it's glorious sound where as the Nighthawk on a slightly lesser scale in some cases.
So when I got it home, I fired it up and was hit with a warm, but detailed sound. I found it to sound less spacious than the Hugo £1400 but more engaging, sweater mid range and while equally as detailed, not as obviously so. Bass on the Mojo is accurate a bit mid bassy compared to Hugo. The Mojo sounds a bit more narrow, not as open and airy as the more expensive Hugo.
Hugo is impressive, it gets a lot of hate on SuperBestAudioFriends but they can be quite negative on that site which is the opposite of the hype fuelled, money driven Headfi. It doesn't deserve the hate for it's sound, the price though, is way high! I personally think it should be a yin yang with the Mojo as they both are good but with different sounds.
It drives pretty much anything I throw at it, without much sweat. HD650 sound as smooth as ever and the Nighthawk sound as bassy and fun as ever. HD800 is driven although I still find it on the leaner side, it does warm up. LCD-2 is driven quite well too. It really does seem to run on emotion, it has that nice, warm British sound to it with lot's of resolution.
Does it replace my amp & dac?
That depends, it certainly bests mid range setups like the Modi & Vali for example and it does sound better than every other dac/amp I've heard under 1k so far. I always prefer minimal designs, I like practicality along with quality. The Mojo might not be worth the hype it gets on Hype-fi but it is a solid device that can drive probably anything and sounds damn good doing so!
