Presumably you got paid an absolute fortune though. If you worked 20hrs lets say that was the equivalent of 1 8hr day at 5x rate, and 1.5 8hr days at 3x rate (assuming the OT rate is the same as normal which seems unlikely). So that's a minimum of 8.5 days pay for working Christmas Day - probably more if your hourly OT rate is higher than your normal rate. Think how many presents that let you buy your son for his next Birthday!

The sort of rates people are quoting in this thread, I'd jump at the chance to work Christmas Day (although lack of public transport would be a ballache if I needed to be in the office).

like many threads on here to do with what peoples jobs are take all claims with a small cargo ship of salt ;)

Seriously - there aren't many areas where I wouldn't try to compromise but that is one area I wouldn't - if the choice was between living on the streets or doing split shifts I'd be on the streets. That is one line I'm not prepared to cross where an employer thinks that level of disruption on their employees life is ok largely for their own convenience/costs - I've done them before the odd time there is a genuine emergency or other significant reason.

Split shifts do seem dreadful! Only industry I know that people do them are chefs etc?

Wouldnt do them for love nor money!

interestingly this year ill probably get the opportunity to work the 24th (swerdish xmas), Xmas day and maybe NYE but ill be home by 4pm so tbh couldn't care less. It will be triple time + uncomfortable working hours bonus on top. Mind blowing money for such a crappy job.

My mate of mine was livid one year when he was meant to demob on Boxing Day but the pilots don't fly on bank holodays so had to wait until the 27th :D
