Not that I really need any help but...

Should I get a 3870 for christmas or get a Rap4 T68 gen4 magazine fed paintball marker?

I do paintball umpiring between 2-6 times a month on a voluntary basis (helps out a friend), but rarely get to play really, and would only be able to realistically use the marker about 2-4 times a year. I love it when I do play however, and have been waiting for a decent marker, and one that is decently priced (only been 1 other model on the market which I didn't like), for about 3-4 years. The one mentioned above is now out and would cost around £300-£350 to get.

Trouble is I'm on an x850xt at the moment which is ok I guess, but not groundbreaking, and only just sufficing for Cod4. Heaven knows what TF2 and Crysis are gonna play like.

What do you reckon? I will prob go for gfx card, but would love a decent marker also.

Not really a question we can answer the the alternative is something that has nothign to do with computing, like someone saying do i buy a new acrpet for my living room as its a bit rough or a new 24" screen, depends what you want more..:)

lol... I'd get a carpet but we rent (as we are moving to the states in next 2-3 years), and the 8800gt is overpriced.

Suppose I'm likely to get more use out of the card whilst here, and I'll be able to us my own paintball marker at more sites in the states. I'll get the card, and wait a few years for the marker :)

Choices choices for brand type and model... hmm 3850 512, and hope they find a bios mod/volt mod for it, or 3870 512mb lol.

It was just a suggestion, but the cheapest 3870 512MB on this site is only about £20 cheaper than the cheapest 8800GT 512MB, and 85% of the performance on average according to Anandtech. ;)

Personally I think it's worth it for the one-slot cooling alone, never mind the image quality and performance. :)

Then again, if price really is an issue there then the 3850s seem to perform on par with the 3870s when overclocked. Something that I, personally, find quite impressive for such a cheap card.

I know it was a suggestion, and yeah I know I could easily get an ultra for the money i'd pay for the marker... but I'm not that insane as I have a x4 pci-e slot lol.

You think the image quality is better on the gt than the 38xx stuff?

That does actually make a difference. I think anything around these speeds would be slightly limited in a 4x PCI-E slot to be honest, I know the GTX was.

Not sure about the 3800s but the 8800s had better image quality than the 2800s. :)

If you're set on buying a 3870 though there's nothing wrong with them, in fact I quite like them assuming they don't have the image quality issues of the 2800s.

i've got a paintball marker (jt usa tac 5) its fun to play with in the back garden, but i hardly ever go paintballing.. (so don't think that by having a paintball marker you will be enticed to go paintballing more)

o.. i've just seen you're moving to the states.. if you can wait that long to get a marker you will save a lot of money..

Yup will be moving to states as wifes American and I wouldn't mind buying a large house with a LOT of land for very cheap :) I use the Tippmann A5's everytime I umpire and pretty much everytime I play. They are our standard site gun (Nothing else comes close for a quality/accuracy on a standard gun). I already own a spyder clone (rubbish cheapo thing for a project), and stuck in the states I have a basic Spyder MR1. I like the tippmanns, really I do, but for me having real magazines to play with is just such a cool factor and something i've kinda always wanted.

This marker has a hopper adaptor in case you need it (i.e. attack/defence games where it would be advatage for defending).

Oh, and I play woodsball on a 120 acre wood, don't get on with speedball as it is all about volume of paint you can lay down a lot of the time.

On the other hand, getting a gfx card will enable me to chill out more often I suppose.
