Hi all

Long time lurker (and buyer!), first time poster.

I’m building a PC for my dad for Christmas. Obviously, I want to build him something that will last him a good while (his PC atm - 2500XP, 512Mb RAM, 9800Pro - has lasted him at least 2 or 3 years) at the same time, not cost the earth, but able to play games at a decent resolution. (Possibly on a 2007FPW according to my mum!)

He plays a few games (Tiger Woods 07, Battlefield 2 and others), listens to music, browses the web etc.

This is what I came up with. It has to be quiet, hence the Shuttle.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB)
Shuttle XPC SD37P2 Aluminium Barebones System - Intel Pentium D (LGA775)
BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM
Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)
Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC4200 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB)

It would be currently connected to a 17"FP which has a resolution of 1280x1024.

A few questions

1) What do you guys think of the Shuttle? Is it quiet? Is there a better solution out there? I.e., would it be better to look for a mATX case and motherboard?

2) I know for a fact he won't be overclocking it, and I won't be overclocking it for him, but is the RAM speed sufficient? Like many, this is my first Intel based system build in a LONG time, so I’m not too sure what speed the RAM should be running at for 1:1.

3) How loud is the 7600GT? Would it be worth getting him a 7900GS?

4) Would it be worth getting him 2 GB of RAM, just for a bit of future proofing?

My budget is ~£700 (the current cost of the system) but I can go over that to a point, possibly up to £100 more, but I'd rather not.

Many thanks guys, and sorry if questions like these are asked a bazillion times.

Ok, so I've done a little research and thinking, and I've come up with an alternate spec.

SilverStone 'SUGO' Evolution SG01B Black Aluminium Small Form Factor Case
ASUS P5B-VM iG965
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 OEM 775, 1.86 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache, OEM
250 Gb Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE16
Samsung SH-S183A/BEBN Black SATA 18x18 ±R Dual Layer DVDRW Writer OEM
1Gb (2X512Mb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800)
500W AKASA Ultra quiet Active PFC ATX 2.2 PSU with Black 12cm Fan
Radeon X1950Pro - Silent variant
NT06 heatsink and fan

For about the same amount of money.

Does anyone have any comments at all? And does anyone know if the case is quiet, or quieter than the shuttle?

the silverstone is a great case, I believe its very quiet, for 100% confirmation i would ask in the case section :)

the shuttle pcs on a whole are really nice , small and compact great esp for media center pc's...

I would think about going 2g RAM as most latest games are using at least 1.4g on max settings...

Re: gfx the 7900GS is better, nvidia cards on the whole are not loud that said you will always hear the fan going on ultra max settings in any game...
The ATI cards however drink a lot of juice and are noisy when you a) first start your system b) during game play - boy they work hard :) c) and are known for giving out a lot of heat...

Thing is, its for my dad, who plays a lot of Tiger Woods, and just a smattering of other games. I would have thought 2Gb of RAM was bit overkill for his needs?

I have a 1900XTX in my main gaming rig, and yeah, it does get loud when it gets hot. Id considered the 7900GS as well. I think either would do as long as they had some sort of silent cooling system in place. But I agree, heat inside the case would be a factor. I really dont want to it sound like a hovercraft!

it would sound like a hovercraft.....the 7900gs is nvidia not ATI :p

then go with the 1gb RAM if more is required he can always upgrade :)

those shuttles suprisingly dont get too hot, a mate has one we talking 30 idle 44 load...its an x2 4400 he has...
