Christmas present £500

If he is heavy in gaming, you should consider an intel system..

Im not sure I would purchase a fx8 system this late into its life (coming from someone who uses a FX 8350 every day).

The AM3+ socket is slowly coming to it's end, there's no upgrade path past the current chips available, an intel chip would be more more advisable.

What games does he play and at what resolution?
I'm assuming you have a monitor & OS already?

Can only agree with what's already been said above.

Post again one week before you're ready to buy something. As ThaReaper said, prices can change a lot. Just a couple of weeks ago, 780Ti's were £500, now they are £350.

I also agree with Rob that it's best to go Intel now, even if it means just getting the basics in to allow for better upgrades in future.

Is amd bring out a new CPU?

not this year, they are supposed to be stepping back in to desktop cpu market but we will have to wait and see..

and on a second note OMG its only September and we are talking Christmas, we are all doomed from here on out.

WOW just seen you want an 8core £100, SSD £70, good mobo that can sli/cf £100

you now have £230 for case, PSU, ram, gfx card....

Drop the case for a Corsair 200r compact and grab a raijintek direct contact cooler. I'd favour the pentium over the AMD, room to upgrade and put more into the GPU.

OP might not need OS or may need OS and monitor.

You would have to mad to invest in AMD these days.

No upgrade path.

What alterwin has posted is best and includes an OS.

Different iterations of the AM3+ series. Piledriver being the latest.

What monitor and OS do you currently have?
I'd favour the Intel still at this point, removing the OS.
