Hi all,

Finally!!I've been waiting to upgrade my mobo/ram/cpu since last summer and it's only one month away now!!

current rig is as in sig, I dont really use it for gaming as much anymore, although I still get any decent new fps that comes out, so 4870x2 is staying!PC is mostly used for general stuff now, web/office etc., although if anything takes over 0.5 seconds to open I get restless.

The original plan (last summer) was to wait till i7 had dropped in price a bit, although I'm now thinking a top end quad core and DDR2 set up may well offer me more 'bang for buck' (I hate that phrase!)

I've looked at this but any advice would be more than welcome...

Q9550
Asus P5Q Pro
Patriot Viper 2x2GB

I'm not up to date with any i7 benching so if I'll get a lot more power from i7/DDR3 then I'll be more than happy to change (new(ish) tech!!:D)

I'm currently using a 26" SyncMaster T260HD and if I'm going to need a new PSU then that will have to be included in the £350

I can't really think of anything else, oh...I will be overclocking the CPU (definately) and ram (possibly)

Thanks,
Richy

I would not choose a socket 775 for a current ugrade, with memory prices same as DDR3 I would look at a i7, i5 or AMD setup.

hmm...what kind of difference will I see between the i7 and i5 set-up? £439 is a bit much I think, although reading the reviews of the 920 make it very tempting...

Also, there's a slightly cheaper x58 board, asus P6T SE, does anyone know what this is like? I was fancying an Asus board just as a change from my current gigabyte, although I've have it almost 3 years now with no problems...

edit: is my current 600W PSU sufficient for both of these?

Well for your uses a i5 will be more than enough, The Asus will be fine should you choose x58, Yes your 600w will be more than enough for both.

I think I'm edging towards the i5 at the minute, although the ddr2 ram is putting me off a bit, it doesnt seem as much of an upgrade as going to ddr3.

how much improvement should I see over the 775 quad core with the i5?

ha :o :o - I meant dual channel as opposed to tri channel!

i5 does seem a lot more sensible, I could splash out on something like this as well then.

I'm assuming it'll offer me a noticeable increase in performance over my current rig? and a nice new case...

dual and tri dont make a difference in normal use so you will be fine, Good choice on the case i am looking to get it myself for my new pc, yes it will give you a nice upgrade.

This is my basket at the minute - I decided to include a modular PSU for the cable management and low noise with this one. I'll get the case seperately.

Does this seem ok? no glaring errors?
