Chrome - I know I'm missing something

So, I had been a Firefox user for quite some time, however I've now found that I rather like the performance of Chrome. It does seem to be lightweight enough that it flies along.
But I know I'm missing something, a trick, that would allow me to customise the Chrome "tabbed start page".

Example:

I fire up Firefox and I've got 15 blank "cells" in the middle of the start page. As I browse they start to become populated. I can however drag bookmarks into those cells, check the "pin" and I can have 15 filled cells with say my most common 15 sites I visit.

How do I do the same in Chrome?
I've got 8 empty cells on start, they are starting to populate, however if I attempt to drag a book mark into the cell it just opens the site in a new tab. There doesn't appear to be any "pin" in these cells, so even if I get all the sites there I don't know how to make them stay.

I know, this should be Chrome 101 - but if someone can point me in the right direction - appreciated.
