Hi all,

A friend is looking for a Chromebook, suitable for infant/junior ages (say 6 - 10) and her budget is £150

I don't know a lot about them but any suggestions for me to research?

They aren't techy people and it's for school work.

At that price they'll be much of a muchness. Avoid unknown brands, Dell/HP/Lenovo etc. will be good. At that price you'll probably be limited to 11", but that's fine for most kids. Specifications aren't really comparable to Windows PCs, I.E. 4GB RAM is just about good enough. Worth asking the school if they have any one to one device schemes, quite a few schools do. They might get the benefit of additional filtering/safeguarding etc.

tbh, that's what I was thinking, a £100 more and it starts to get a little more interesting but they do all seem the same.

And thanks, I'll tell her to speak to the school as well

New or used?

I got myself an almost-unused Dell 3190 2-in-1 evilbay a wee while ago. Runs fast with linux mint. Battery lasts for 6-8 hours. Folds down into a tablet for reading/watching a video. Even has rubber padding along the perimeter so not too afraid of getting bumped.
£54 from ebay. I was too daft and trigger-happy, I could have got another one for £48:mad:.
Very handy size & functionality, and it's still a full-blown laptop.
I am extremely pleased with it, it's just very handy to have around and small enough to chuck into the backpack. Probably the best £54 I've spent on IT, ever.

Cons:
Double the weight and thickness of a tablet.
Linux touchscreen functionality is very limited compared to Win10.

6 year olds are better off playing outside instead of staring at screens ;)
