basically my father works away and my mam wants to keep in contact with him but she is utter useless on computers, im just wondering if a chromebook would be any easier to use also would the chromebook be able to use skype? i see google video chat, can that also be used on a windows laptop? thanks.

I wonder if the original poster was actually looking for practical responses from his fellow OCuk forum mates, folks who could help and give real answers from their experience of using a chromebook. Shame you were the first to respond eh...

Nah, don't be silly...

OP, I don't think you can use Skype on a Chromebook currently, and as it's Microsoft's software I wouldn't hold your breath. A Chromebook does sound handy for your mum though - could you set up a Google account for her? Or does it need to be Skype?

If it needs to be Skype, how about a cheap Android tablet?

Why? Two simple questions. That Google could have answered in a few minutes.

I am all for helping people when I can but people should do their own research first.

You can use Google Hangouts on Chromebooks easily and quite successfully.

Did you know that you can have up to 9 different people on a Hangout video call in 9 different locations?

Amazing. I use Hangouts daily.

Question for someone who has set up a cloud printer on Chromebooks: got as far as the set up asking for my internal ip address but when I provide it to the Google cloud printer enabled Brother printer, it does not accept it. Anyone can help?

She'd probably be happier with a tablet, even something (dare i say it) like an ipad. My mum is useless with technology in general so i have just given her my ipad to use for skype. she seems to cope with it fine (most of the time).

And no i am not an apple fanboy, pc and android fanboy hah

skype has been intergrated into outlook has it not? Could you not use it like that?

I literally just bought a Acer C720 Chromebook so will give this a go and let you know.

Edit: Under the people tab on outlook it does say connected to skype "but I don't have any people online to try it". Your welcome to add me and ill try it for you.
