My sons school (we live in NZ) is using google chromebooks and the google education suite for their learning. We're looking at getting him a chromebook as this is required but I'm curious about why, given how resource lite chromeos is, that manufacturers are doing i3 and i5 chromebooks.

He is currently using an old i7 4600 powered laptop with windows 10 which he just plays roblox and minecraft on, and these are compatible with ChromeOS so this is one of the requirements for us is that the device can play as well as the 7 year old laptop. Is there any need for a grunty i3 or i5 or would an n4120 be sufficient? There is a ~700NZD difference between the two types but that doesn't concern me, I just want to make sure that I'm purchasing something of suitable performance for the future.

Any guidance or comments are greatly appreciated.

The Celeron N processors are rubbish and will struggle in games even basic ones. They may be okay for ChromeOS but anything to do with Windows 10 they are painful to use from experience. The i7 4600 is a lot more powerful than the N4120.
