Hi all,
Does anyone use this with no WiFi?
I have no home WiFi as simply cannot afford it.

I've seen it doesn't support mobile internet, but you can do it through hotspots and a 2nd phone.

Is this really the way you have to do it?

A hotspot or second phone is simply creating a local wifi connection and then bridging to the internet over a mobile connection. But it sounds like you don't need the mobile connection and you simply need a wifi router. These can be had very cheaply on ebay.

I have a 2nd phone. I might also have a router kicking around somewhere.

I'll bear it in mind, cheers.

Actually, thinking a second time, that might not work. You would have to connect your first phone to it, at which point your first phone then loses internet access. Worth a try though.

If a 2nd phone is the way to do it, it'll have to be that. I also heard about 'guest mode'. I'm researching it before I buy it so it does what I want. Hoping to play sky+ etc through phone cast to TV.

This is what I do with my Note 10 and Chromecast.

You need to install the Google Home app on the phone and turn on "mobile hotspot". The Chromecast will detect the hotspot and ask to pair the Chromecast and phone by entering a code in the Google Home app. Now when the Chromecast turns on it will always try to connect to that phone, or any other "mobile hotspots" that have been added.

Once connected to the Chromecast I use the in-app options to "cast" to the Chromecast. There is also the option to cast the phone screen using an option in the Google Home app, which just displays what my phone is displaying.

The casting option sometimes doesn't work in VLC when I am playing videos (probably down to the coding used in the files) and I either have to use a seperate app, BubbleUPnP, or cast my phone screen while the video is playing.

Perfect. Exactly the information I was after, thank you.
