I use Plex (With thei media server) although that Transcodes files like that so a decent machine with some grunt is required.
Works very well though and even though I have 4 different dedicated XMBC machines Chromecast sitting in the kitchen watching TV shows via Plex is just awesome.
That'll do the trick nicely mate.
just install Plex's PMS on your I5 machine - add your file directories to that (It's a nice GUI that simply runs in browser so easily done)
- it will add artwork and info etc.
Once PMS is running you install the Plex App from Amazon or Google Play (It does cost about £3) and from there you'll be able to stream all the MKV's in the world. High Bit-rate 1080 files all no problem.
It's probably sounds harder than it is.
It actually won't take you more than a few minuets to get it going and the PMS can be left running in the background of your I5 machine, it barely takes up any resources UNTIL you want a file via Chromecast at which point it'll mostly use your CPU to transcode the files for you on the fly.
On my I7 which won't be much different to your machine large files start playing on the Chromecash in about 3-5 seconds from hitting play.
